JOB DESCRIPTION: CNA has an excellent opportunity for an experienced production underwriter to manage and grow a commercial construction book of business. This role will focus on the commercial construction industry class (commercial contracting and general contractors) for mid to large accounts typically ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000 and over in premium on a multi-line basis (guaranteed cost and may include some loss sensitive business). Our Construction Underwriters are high level individual contributors responsible for overall management, business development, growth and profitability of a book of multi-line business. Recognized as a technical expert in an underwriting specialty they will drive business results through strong sales, marketing and relationship building skills with external Agents and internal business partners (local and Home Office teams). CNA’s US Commercial Insurance Operations provides standard lines commercial P&C insurance products such as General and Product Liability, Property and Inland Marine, Commercial Auto, and Workers' Compensation to businesses of all sizes. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines: 1. Works on highly complex underwriting risks employing diagnostic and systematic analysis to assess acceptability. 2. Develops specialized endorsement language for highly complex risk. 3. Determines appropriate pricing of complex risks for assigned book of business based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements and with little oversight needed from superiors. 4. Makes recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy. 5. Analyzes quality, quantity, and profitability of highly complex risks underwritten; prepares and presents reports to management. 6. Markets products and services through agencies or through the brokerage community and makes field visits. 7. Develops and maintains agency and/or broker relationships with large producers within the assigned territory to reach positive and profitable outcomes on complex, high-risk business. 8. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends. 9. May participate in industry trade groups. 10. Mentors and guides less experienced underwriters and assists in the development of underwriting training. 11. Utilizes advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities. 12. Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations Reporting Relationship Manager or above Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 1. Advanced technical expertise, underwriting skill and high level of knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures. 2. Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners. 3. Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects. 4. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues. 5. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems. 6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software. 7. Demonstrated leadership skills. Education and Experience 1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 2. Professional designations preferred. (CRIS, CPCU) 3. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location. In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In California, Colorado, Connecticut, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $71,000 to $133,000 annually.
