Position Definition:
Under general supervision, perform skilled journey-level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and fixtures; assists in performing other maintenance duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Requires a comprehensive knowledge of the trade of plumber, including using appropriate tools, safety techniques, equipment and supplies to maintain and repair the plumbing systems and equipment of buildings and other facilities, and to perform a variety of related construction and general maintenance work as required.

Examples of Duties/Essential Functions:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Complete journey-level plumbing work, including installing, replacing, maintaining and/or repairing all plumbing-related systems and equipment, air, gas, water, and sewer pipes, fittings and fixtures, according to approved codes.
  • Installs and maintains low pressure vessels; cuts, threads and welds a variety of pipe such as copper and steel.
  • Identifies causes for gas, water and sewer leaks or malfunctions.
  • Replaces worn or inadequate pipe, sheet metal, valves, fixtures and traps.
  • Tests pipe systems for proper operation and determines requirements for additional equipment.
  • Plans or modifies plumbing and piping systems to accommodate new construction or existing facility alteration.
  • Estimates costs and materials required.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematic diagrams and sketches to perform installation, maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports.
  • Takes water samples; performs simple chemical tests and treats water supplies.
  • Maintains and repairs items such as valves and pumps.
  • Supervise workers assigned to assist on various projects.
  • Plan, coordinate and participate in performing rough and finished plumbing work from beginning to end.
  • Plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of skilled plumbing and general-construction duties supporting the maintenance, repair and remodeling of college facilities and buildings.
  • Repair and maintain storm and area drainage system components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and plumbing work; evaluate and recommend preventative maintenance programs; prepares and maintains maintenance records.
  • Oversee the use, care and operation of a variety of plumbing equipment and tools, including but not limited to saws, snakes, drills, sanders, grinders, drill presses, and various hand-tools of the trade.
  • Respond to and resolve routine and emergency calls for service.
  • Work from diagrams, blueprints, layouts, work orders, verbal instructions, or other specifications to install, troubleshoot, and test plumbing systems.
  • Serve as a technical specialist and assists with the operation, maintenance and future expansion of district building automation systems.
  • Observe safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Assist other trades personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:Graduation from high school or its equivalent and completion of a recognized apprentice training program of at least four years' duration in the plumbing trade and one year of recent, full-time, paid, journey-level experience in the plumbing trade.ORGraduation from high school or its equivalent and five years of recent, full-time, paid experience in plumbing work under the supervision of a journey level or crafts supervisor. One year of the required experience must have been at the journey-level.

EDUCATION/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:Possession of a high school diploma/GED or the equivalent.Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

Knowledge Of:
  • Tools, equipment and procedures used in plumbing work.
  • Characteristics of various types of pipes, metals, fixtures and equipment.
  • Basic principles of plumbing system design.
  • Use and maintenance of a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Modern software applications (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Safe work practices.


Skill To:
  • Install, inspect, maintain, modify, diagnose malfunctions, and repair plumbing systems and related equipment.
  • Make accurate measurements and computations.
  • Cut materials precisely.
  • Work effectively without immediate supervision.
  • Operate all plumbing equipment and tools effectively and safely.
  • Effectively use test equipment.
  • Effectively utilize computer systems and software applicable to the plumbing trade
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Read, interpret, and work from drawings, sketches, schematics, plans and blueprints.
  • Learn characteristics of new systems and equipment of the plumbing trade and update skills to adapt to changing technology.
  • Learn general and specialized software applications.
  • Maintain accurate logs and basic written records of work performed.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with District staff, students, and outside contractors
  • Perform heavy physical labor, including safely lifting and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequent bending and twisting at the waist and neck, and frequent to continuous walking or standing.
  • Travel to and from any district college campus and/or facility.
  • Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio- economic, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, mental or physical disability, and religious background of all students, faculty and staff, and with all individuals encountered in the performance of required duties.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Minimum for 4 years' experience at a journey-level/trade with 1 year of full-time paid work at a journey level plumbing trade. OR Five years full-time paid experience working under the supervision of a journey level/crafts supervisor with 1 year full-time at journey level experience.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to plumbing.
  • General software applications and maintain paperwork.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor - twisting, bending, lifting, continuous standing/kneeling/sitting based on job.


Special Instructions:
Note: New employees will be placed at the first step which is $79,704 per year, second step $83,736 per year or third step at $87,972 per year (depending upon experience). Based on current salary placement guidelines, all step increases for which an employee becomes eligible shall take place on July 1st of each fiscal year. These increases will occur, on annual basis, until the maximum step of $97,080 per year is reached on the salary schedule.
