Branch Laboratory Supervisor

Position Summary:
Supervises laboratory and collection site operations and employees by performing the following functions.
You Will:
- Maintains demonstrated proficiency with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
- Performs quantitative sperm counts by microscopy.
- Determines volume, percent motility and total motile sperm per specimen.
- Determines appropriate means of processing (ICI or IUI) each particular specimen.
- Calculates the amount of cryo-extender that must be added to the specimen.
- Assesses sperm morphology using WHO criteria.
- Performs routine cryogenic procedures including vial transfers.
- Oversees phlebotomy on-site services
- Processes and prepares blood and urine specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
- Reviews reference lab testing and follows up on positive results or discrepancies.
- Reports applicable positive test results to the Department of Health.
- Reviews reference lab testing invoices for accuracy.
- Direct supervision of donor coordinator administrative team with HQ support on program management.
- Manages laboratory schedule to provide adequate coverage, including tank checks.
- Assists Management in conducting lab meetings on a regular basis.
- Conducts and accurately records all required quality control checks and takes corrective action as needed.
- Assures routine maintenance of laboratory equipment is performed at defined intervals.
- Assures routine validation of laboratory and cryogenic equipment is performed at defined intervals.
- Abides by all quality assurance/quality control, standard operating, and safety procedures.
- Reviews and signs off on potential donor specimen evaluations.
- Participates in proficiency assessments.
- Documents and/or communicates errors, accidents or incidents to the Branch Manager.
- Reviews and signs off on monthly QC records.
- Initiates problem logs for any equipment or process issues.
- Contributes to standard operating procedure modifications.
- Reviews donor and client specimen processing data (worksheets or manifests).
- Reviews Navision worksheet entries prior to transfer/post activity.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- All employees in the collection site report directly to this position. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting Management with interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
You Have:
- Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in Science and a minimum of 4 years related laboratory experience.
- Ability to speak and write English; communicate effectively and professionally with clients and external contacts; read and interpret documents, such as procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and employees.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals and to compute rate, ratio and percent.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Knowledge of MS Word and Excel
- Phlebotomy experience desired, not required.
- Phase-contrast microscopy skills; excellent customer service skills; strong attention to details; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; high level of interpersonal skills to interact with peers and management; excellent organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality; and ability to travel.
- Familiarity with laboratory and medical terminology; training in the handling of liquid nitrogen.
