Manager, Underwriting - Middle Market

CopperPoint has an exciting opportunity for a Manager, Underwriting. The Underwriting Manager will be responsible for the overall underwriting, profit, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with the strategy of the company. This position will recruit, coach and develop underwriting staff to achieve individual, department and company objectives.

Job Responsibilities:

• Develops, implements, monitors and executes underwriting strategies to support the organization’s objectives.
• Maintain a strong understanding of the marketplace, pricing, and product offerings as well as demographic trends and report any changes that may impact the company's position in the market and develop mitigation plans where appropriate.
• Demonstrate and develop highly collaborative relationships, as well as a work environment, with all internal business partners including Business Development & Distribution, Claims, Loss Control, Premium Audit, PACTS, etc.
• Sustain a thorough working knowledge of all company operations such as underwriting guidelines, procedures and tools, and policy and coverage provisions.
• Establishes, monitors, and provides pricing guidance on new and renewal business to assure long-term profitability.
• Extensive knowledge of profitability, growth, and risk concepts.
• Develop staff through effective coaching and mentoring to maximize individual employee contributions for achievement of personal and company goals.
• Provide feedback and technical guidance to underwriters and/or underwriting assistants.
• Conduct file reviews on a regular basis to identify training or coaching opportunities.
• Participate in agency selection and review process.
• Manage assigned book of business, and underwriting team, as if it was his/her own business and continuously stay abreast of book performance, trends, new/ renewal large account status, and agency management challenges.
• Take personal responsibility for success and results of assigned team and book of business.

Qualifications/Competencies:

• BS/BA college degree. The knowledge and skill levels acquired through undergraduate level studies especially in the areas of business administration, finance, or marketing.
• 8 years of P & C insurance industry experience with increasing responsibility and prior supervisory experience-preferred.
• Strong business and financial acumen.
• Ability to effectively influence internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively lead self and others through change.
• Knowledge of insurance principles, rates, rules, forms, procedures, regulations, coverages and business processes.
• Analyze complex administrative or business problems, evaluate alternatives, and make appropriate recommendations.
• Ability to effectively coach assigned team members to improve performance and to develop employees for future roles of additional responsibility.
