The Cordova Recreation & Park District is seeking a full-time Recreation Coordinator specializing in youth and adult sports and fitness programming at the Mather Sports Center/Complex. We are an award-winning agency that thrives on positive relationships and partnerships in our community.

About the District
The Cordova Recreation & Park District (CRPD) is one of the largest independent special districts in Northern California serving over 128,000 residents and four school districts in the greater Sacramento area. CRPD provides over 44 parks and recreational facilities, a full-service 18-Hole golf course at the Cordova Golf Course, as well as youth & adult sports, camps, enrichment classes, educational programs, and special events for the community.
 
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal Recreation Coordinator – Sports and Fitness candidate has knowledge in sports and fitness programming and is skilled in developing and maintaining a successful recreation culture. The Recreation Coordinator provides, organizes, coordinates, markets, implements, and evaluates a wide variety of recreational sports, health, and fitness activities; including leagues, programs, camps and clinics; and provides leadership, robust customer service and general guidance for recreation programs and services involving children, teens, adults, and seniors.

Must possess excellent verbal communication, exceptional organizational and time management skills and have the ability to work both independently and as a team, building and maintaining positive working relationships with all co-workers, public and private user groups, customers, contract instructors, and other members of the general public. Duties are primarily performed at the Mather Sports Center but includes travel to various recreation sites, including athletic fields, parks, community centers, schools, and other locations within CRPD boundaries.  
 
Class Summary
Under general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor II, the Recreation Coordinator provides, organizes, coordinates, markets, implements, and evaluates a wide variety of recreational and social programs and services. The Recreation Coordinator designs, implements, and evaluates programs, classes, services, activities, and events to meet the needs of the community. The position also provides leadership and general guidance for recreation programs and services involving children, teens, adults, and seniors. Work is performed at variety of recreation sites, including the Mather Sports Center/Complex, community centers, playgrounds, parks, schools, and other sites. Incumbents may be considered experts in subject areas such as sports, crafts, events, or senior activities, or may be program generalists.
 

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. 

Coordination of Recreation Programs:

  • Plan, organize, market, implement, evaluate, and coordinate recreational and sports programs, classes, camps, leagues and events, and related activities.
  • Develop or assist in the development of new recreation programs, events, and activities and review current programs for effectiveness, impact, and interest.
  • Recruit, assign, train, coordinate, and review the work of subordinate staff and volunteers in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and procedures for the assigned programs and services.
  • Collaborate and communicate with various community and volunteer organizations, schools, and other agencies to advance programs, services, and events.
  • Promote and coordinate specific activities within assigned program area; prepare informational material including brochures, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets, and other publicity materials.
  • Research and apply for grant initiatives to provide supplemental funding to programs. Identify and cultivate sponsorship opportunities to financially support programs. 
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties in support of recreation programs; answer phones; gather information and prepare reports; maintain a variety of records and reports.
  • Act as Department representative to local residents, governmental agencies, community groups, private businesses, and others concerning questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation programs and facility operations; attend neighborhood meetings to solicit community support.
  • Oversee monetary transactions related to department’s programs and operations.
  • Substitute for subordinate staff as necessary.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Coordination of Recreation Facilities:
  • Work with the Recreation Supervisor II and Recreation Coordinator to ensure athletic fields and facilities are scheduled and programmed appropriately. 

Education and Experience (position requirements at entry):
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with specialized training in recreation management, leisure and hospitality services, public/business administration, or a closely related field.
Two to three years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation operations, including a combination of recreation programming, special events, permit/contract administration and staff supervision.  Knowledge of modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning and supervision of recreation programs and/or facilities.

Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in planning and supervision of recreation programs and facilities; basic methodology of organizing groups, programs, and services in a recreational setting and the ability to effectively implement them
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public parks and recreation program planning, organization, and administration
  • Knowledge or ability to learn rules and equipment requirements utilized in youth and adult athletic and recreational programs and activities to ensure safety and proper use of recreation facilities and equipment
  • Safety principles and practices
  • Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Publisher
  • Recreation Programming software (e.g., ACTIVENet)
  • The promotion and marketing of recreation offerings (e.g., sports field rentals, classes, programs, services, activities, and events)

Ability to:
  • Provide robust internal and external customer service at an exceptionally high level
  • Plan activities and direct Mather Sports Complex staff on-site and at other District parks and facilities 
  • Establish and maintain supportive, effective working relationships with supervisors and support staff
  • Analyze situations accurately and develop, recommend, and execute an effective course of action
  • Provide instructions, relay processes and articulate procedures
  • Maintain and enhance CRPD and Mather Sports Center/Complex policies
  • Effectively communicate and work closely with individuals of diverse backgrounds; various ages, demographics, and departments District-wide
  • Manage time and resources; organize and prioritize workloads
  • Communicate, motivate, train, and lead front-line staff and volunteers
  • Adapt, pivot, and find solutions to complex problems and issues
  • Be flexible and adapt to altered situations (e.g., emergencies, inclement weather, etc.)
  • Elicit community and organization support for programs 
  • Communicate professionally and tactfully with the general public at all times
  • Address all questions and concerns tactfully and in alignment with CRPD’s Mission and Vision
  • Effectively and professionally communicate orally and in writing
  • Gather, analyze, and report information; provide feedback and suggestions 
  • Set-up equipment for a variety of athletic activities; stage information booths; hang banners; move tables/chairs; carry supplies
  • Effectively respond to emergency situations in a calm and professional manner; administer First Aid and CPR as required (if certified) 
  • Work evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating on-call schedule (if needed)
Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in loud environments
  • Strength and agility to occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Required to take and pass a drug screening
License or Certificate:
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification in First Aid and CPR within six months of employment 
  • Knowledge of concussion protocol
