Job Summary

Provide services in accordance with Spectrum Health Lakeland's commitment to caring for those victimized by sexual assault/abuse, intimate partner violence, child abuse, vulnerable adult abuse and other victims of violence as requested in our community. Under minimal supervision provides and manages professional forensic nursing care to patients in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act, professional nursing standards, and established hospital and nursing policies and procedures. Exercises professional judgment in utilizing the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Works closely with and may direct other professional, ancillary, and/or volunteer personnel providing total nursing care. Collect health data and information related to sexual or physical violence and reports information to the appropriate sources. Maintain documents and prepares reports related to the care provided for those sexually or physically assaulted/abused in the community. Provide courtroom testimony when subpoenaed.


Essential Functions

  • Direct, supervise and evaluate nursing care provided to Forensic Care and Advocacy patients. Perform and document event and medical history accurately. Perform when appropriate; a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography. Assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate. Document injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence when appropriate. Maintain chain of custody for each medical forensic exam and adhere to evidence protocols.
  • Consistently demonstrates an ability to effectively utilize the prescribed nursing process to provide forensic nursing care. Execute professional nursing judgment in delivery of quality patient care. Maintain the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of Lakeland Regional Health System and the nursing department with high quality and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with other health care providers using the nursing process to achieve discharge goals based on assessed patient needs. Collaborate with other professionals (e.g., law enforcement officers, prosecutors, victim advocates, protective services.) in delivery of comprehensive medical forensic care. Provide testimony as a witness when requested. Coordinate with attorneys during judicial process.
  • Assesses the patient/significant other, health care team, and community educational needs and develops, implements, evaluates and revises teaching strategies/educational programs related to area of specialty. Develop and maintain network with internal and external partners to support programming. Develops support systems for patient population and coordinates program with other system-wide/community support programs. Participates in Hospital/Community committees as member and consultant on quality care issues.
  • Perform duties specific to the Forensic Care & Advocacy program such as triage, comprehensive medical forensic services, and medical screening examinations for sexual and physical assault patients meeting Forensic Care & Advocacy program criteria for services.
  • Maintain a commitment to professional growth and development by participation in mandatory annual in-services, certification, Lakeland Regional Health System committees, and educational programs for improvement of self to maintain competency. Maintain a commitment to the achievement of quality health care services by maintaining patient rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality, and the "customer relations" philosophy.
  • Collaborate with Forensic Care & Advocacy program medical director and other forensic nurses in planning and delivery of patient care.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. Provide testimony as a witness when requested. Coordinate with attorneys during judicial process. Participate in professional development, peer review, conferences and in-services as determined by Forensic Care & Advocacy program. Maintain clinical expertise as a forensic nurse by completing a medical forensic exam or mock exam at least once every six months. Share individual expertise with other members of Forensic Care & Advocacy.

Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • 2 years of relevant experience of acute care nursing experience Required
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan required And
  • CRT-Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) - CFNC Commission for Forensic Nursing Certification required for 0.5 FTE and above positions. preferred for PRN Staff 3 Yrs required And
  • CRT-Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Pediatric (SANE-P) - CFNC Commission for Forensic Nursing Certification required for 0.5 FTE and above positions. preferred for PRN Staff 3 Yrs required
