The Corix team has an opportunity for a Payroll Specialist in Chicago, IL. Working within the HR Team, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for ensuring timely, accurate, and proper processing of bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll for more than 800 employees across the United States and Canada using the Oracle Cloud platform. Complete payroll related activities and transactions, maintaining accurate records and compliance with federal, state and local laws. Taking a customer focused approach to support, the Payroll Specialist resolves inquires and issues through excellent communication and a sense of urgency.
What you’ll do
- Responsible for processing end to end bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll and other payroll activities for 800 employees across the United States and Canada.
- Serve as a first point of contact for employee issues; answering questions, troubleshooting problems, and determining solutions.
- Compile and maintain accurate payroll information, including but not limited to hours, taxes, insurance, garnishments, withholdings, and remittances.
- Supports periodic internal audits of various payroll areas; assists with preparation of materials for external auditors and internal customers.
- Process bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll according to policy, procedures, and regulations for 800 US and Canadian employees using the Oracle Cloud platform, ensuring accurate and timely transmission. Process off-cycle payroll transactions as necessary.
- Process, calculate, and post payroll transactions including retroactive payments, benefit deduction/payments, retirement contributions, wage garnishments, etc. as required.
- Audit timecards for accuracy. Prepare, reconcile, and correct payroll reports; audits all aspects of payroll ensuring employees are paid correctly each period.
- Works closely with Human Resources department to ensure data integrity within the HR/Payroll System with other members of the HR team, ensuring the integrity of payroll data related to new hires, terminations, transfers, promotions, rate changes, retroactive payments, deduction amounts, incentive payments and other ad hoc complex pay calculations.
- Acts as a Subject Matter Expert, using strong customer service skills to assist employees with payroll questions and guide them through the employee self-serve portal; Investigate, analyze, and resolve employee issues related to payroll processing and related activities in a timely manner.
- Provide support and instruction for managers and employees to ensure timely, accurate completion of time entry and absence requests within the payroll system.
- Full understanding of Federal, State and Local taxes; liaise with agencies as needed to ensure Corix is properly registered in each state and/or province. Work with payroll vendor's tax department to ensure accurate, timely filing of all local, state, and federal taxes and related reports.
What you bring
Experience

Minimum of 3-5 years of multi-state payroll processing experience with a mid-large Company (750 employees), preferably with some experience or exposure to Canadian payroll
Education and Certification
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field of study preferred
Skills
- Strong operational knowledge of payroll systems (Oracle Cloud and/or ADP preferred)
- Strong understanding of payroll, payroll tax compliance, and accounting processes
Nice to Have
- Experience/familiarity with Canadian payroll practices and laws preferred
