The Opportunity

Within the SC Johnson College of Business, Area Chairs oversee the eight areas of scholarship across the College: Accounting; Applied Economics and Policy; Finance; Management & Organization; Marketing & Management Communication; Operations, Technology, & Information Management; Strategy and Business Economics; and Services Management. Area coordination plays a critical role as it builds relationships across the three schools in common areas, developing informal and formal activities, developing curriculum within a discipline, and overseeing area personnel and external relations.


As an Area Chair Coordinator, you will be at the heart of our Faculty Affairs office, supporting the effective business and daily administrative operations of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business College Area initiatives, programs, and events. Your expertise in project management, administrative skills, and budget management will be essential in ensuring the smooth administration of various initiatives. This role requires a proactive and collaborative mindset, as you will work closely with faculty, graduate students, and staff to create a vibrant and inclusive academic environment.


Responsibilities:
Your role as an Area Chair Coordinator will involve a diverse range of responsibilities to support the College of Business's success:

  • Coordinate meeting and event logistics, including scheduling, preparing materials, managing reservations, and overseeing financial records.
  • Manage complex travel arrangements, visitor accommodations, and procurement tasks to ensure smooth operations.
  • Maintain effective correspondence and promptly address inquiries from area faculty members.
  • Oversee the faculty annual review process for the respective areas.
  • Expand and maintain the College area website, keeping it up-to-date with relevant content such as workshops, publications, and awards.
  • Prepare financial reports and track faculty funding requests to ensure accurate record-keeping.
  • Collaborate on program and event design, bringing creative and effective ideas to life.
  • Develop and manage online evaluation tools to gather faculty votes and stakeholder feedback, analyzing and interpreting results.
  • Coordinate communication with both internal and external participants.
  • Edit, compose, and coordinate materials for correspondence, papers, and reports while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Assist with inquiries, orient visitors, and handle various tasks as needed.
  • Collaborate with and provide back-up for other team members, including the Faculty Recruiting Coordinator and Area Events Coordinator, to ensure seamless operations.

What We Need

  • Associate’s degree and 4 to 6 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills. Accuracy in spelling, grammar, proofreading, and attention to detail required.
  • Working knowledge of database management and office technology, specifically Outlook and Excel, and the ability to adapt to new technologies and platforms.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with utmost discretion and integrity.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully providing exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external constituents.
  • Experience that demonstrates sound judgment, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure, use sound judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a wide range of choices.
  • Must be flexible and receptive to new ideas and approaches.
  • Must take initiative, meet challenges with resourcefulness and tact, and have ability to work independently.
  • Experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing programs. Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely 1 day per week and on-campus 4 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholding for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside of New York State.
