Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. FM serves as a partner within the zone structure for the Contract Colleges (CC), Endowed (EN), and Student and Campus Life (SCL) zones.
As a key steward of the University’s facilities, FM is responsible for facility assessments, skilled trades, general construction, building care, grounds, recycling, asbestos, and the management of planned, corrective, and preventive maintenance.
Position Summary:
The Building Care Department at Cornell University is looking for a motivated and hardworking individual to join their team!
The S03 Custodian performs physically intensive and detailed custodial maintenance of Cornell's academic, residential, administrative, research, athletic, dining, and support facilities in an assigned area. Cleans and maintains restrooms, public corridors, lobbies, offices, classrooms, laboratories, lounges, kitchens, apartments, laundry rooms, and athletic locker-room facilities. Vacuums, shampoos, and extracts carpeting; scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors; polishes furniture and woodwork; thoroughly cleans and disinfects restroom facilities. Operates and maintains heavy-duty power custodial equipment. Job requires working in a dusty environment, utilizing a variety of cleaning chemicals, working around unpleasant odors, and performing emergency flood-water clean-ups. Always maintains key security. Performs work in close contact with the Cornell public involving 31,000 students, faculty, and staff, respecting the privacy of all customers served. Maintains grounds in the immediate vicinity of the assigned area, by sweeping sidewalks and shoveling snow. 39 hours per week, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shifts and days and/or weekends available.
This position also requires the individual to assist in the delivery of tables and chairs around campus. Will involve working off hours (nights and weekends) and overtime as needed. Requires repeated heavy lifting of tables of chairs using equipment that is made to complete this task safely in the setup of events and the tear down of events. Will assist in special projects as needed at different Custodial Complexes. Assist in the duties of the fire watch program where needed. Be trained and able to ride mechanized equipment in the cleaning of the rubberized track at Barton Hall. Will be required to assist in working special events in Barton Hall and around campus. Will assist in the cleaning of outside Windows with a window pole during down times. Will help additional complexes with snow blowing and gas replenishment in the wintertime as time allows.
Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demand. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods. Must be free of debilitating dust allergies or can manage such allergy.
This position is covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement. At the end of the probationary period, employees will be required to pay union dues per Article 1 of the Agreement.
This is a union position within the United Auto Worker's bargaining unit (UAW). The rate of pay is $19.34/hour.

Required Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent. Basic proficiency in English involving reading, writing, math, and verbal articulation. Able to follow written and verbal directions involving all custodial protocol. The desire and ability to perform detailed, varied cleaning duties, working in a dusty environment, with unpleasant odors, and with substances including bodily fluids and waste. Able to work with a variety of industrial-rated cleaning chemicals and be comfortable assisting with emergencies including water clean-ups.
Ability to operate heavy-duty power custodial equipment. Able and qualified to drive cube trucks and haul trailers safely across campus. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain DOT certification for requirement of driving vehicles over 10,001 pounds for delivery of tables and chairs. Able to identify and coordinate the repair of cube trucks and other vehicles.
A positive attitude and the ability to always promote teamwork in a diverse working environment. Able to always conduct oneself in a professional manner. Excellent interpersonal, communication, customer service skills, and ability to work effectively within a strong team environment. Being able to function effectively in a fast-paced service environment and adapt easily to frequent changes. Maintaining key security, while respecting the privacy of faculty, staff, and student work areas. Must have the stamina to perform physically laborious work, lift and/or move fifty (50) pounds, and independently climb an eight (8) foot ladder. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures. Ability to learn all technical elements of the custodial maintenance process and be able to physically and safely operate industrial-rated power equipment used in custodial maintenance field. A strong work ethic and demonstrated excellent attendance. Have reliable transportation. May be required to use own vehicle on the job. Attends staff development trainings. You will be required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license, and you will be subject to periodic DMV checks on your driver’s license with satisfactory results.

Experience in the custodial maintenance field.
