Cornell University’s College of Engineering (Ithaca, NY) is seeking seasonal readers for the 2022-23 undergraduate admission application reading season. Seasonal readers will be trained by the Engineering admissions staff to evaluate first-year applications, including the review of high school transcripts, personal essays, recommendation letters, standardized test scores, and other application components. The admissions review is comprehensive and completed within a holistic framework, taking into consideration each applicant's personal, academic, and extracurricular credentials within the context of a highly selective admissions environment.

Seasonal readers are expected to commit to working 10-20 hours per week during early decision application review, beginning with training (October to early December, 2022) and 20-25 per week during regular decision application review (January 3 through mid-March, 2023). Readers will conduct a comprehensive review on average of 4-5 applications per hour during regular decision. Training and work will be conducted both in person and remotely via Zoom. Compensation begins at $18/hour.


Seasonal readers will be placed on a team, comprised of readers and an admissions staff member, for the duration of the reading period. To ensure that admissions decision deadlines are met, seasonal readers must be able to read quickly, carefully, and objectively while providing thorough notes. They will need to maintain steady and frequent communication with the admissions office and be receptive to guidance and feedback from admissions staff.

All applications are read online. Candidates must have a computer with access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection, and must have access to a private, secure location in which to work.

We cannot consider candidates who either currently work closely with high school students or are college admission professionals, including high school guidance counselors and independent consultants, or are employees at another undergraduate institution. We also cannot consider candidates who are the parents/guardians of a high school junior or senior. (Additional situational guidelines may also apply).

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree is required. To ensure that admissions decision deadlines are met, seasonal readers must be able to read quickly, carefully, and objectively while providing thorough and detailed notes.

Well-developed computer skills and the ability to adapt to new technology are crucial.

Candidates must own a computer and have access to a high speed internet connection.

Must be able to spend long periods of time reading from a computer screen.

Effective time management skills.

Strong attention to detail and ability to exercise sound judgment.

Willingness and ability to apply institutional priorities in accordance with training.

Willingness to accept feedback and quickly adapt to suggested modifications.

Ability to maintain the strictest levels of discretion and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in selective college admissions and/or attendance at, or previous employment at, a highly selective university.
