Location: Strong preference for in-person role at Corning’s Corporate HQ in Corning, NY. Remote work may be considered but with a requirement for regular travel to Corning’s HQ and thus location of remote role may be dependent upon proximity to Corning, ease of travel, etc. Scope of Position: We are seeking a bright, motivated attorney interested in making a difference in a well-respected Law Department in a historic U.S. company. Reporting to the VP & Chief Compliance Officer, this role provides support for Corning’s Corporate Compliance program, primarily in areas of U.S. regulatory compliance, such as export control and sanctions, government contracts, and similar regulatory programs, as well as supporting programmatic elements of Corning’s Corporate Compliance program, such as developing and providing training, policy development and implementation, conducting investigations, and assessments of compliance and regulatory risk. This role will work closely with colleagues within Corning to ensure that Corning operates in compliance with applicable U.S. laws and regulations.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Provide legal guidance to Corning personnel on a variety of issues regarding U.S. export controls and sanctions; perform work such as investigating possible areas of noncompliance; drafting and submitting license applications and voluntary disclosures; and overseeing product classifications.
- Oversee the review of U.S. government contract requirements; advise business unit personnel on U.S. government contract regulatory issues; support legal issues related to subcontractor management in connection with U.S. government contracts and similar issues.
- Research and advise on legal issues impacting the organization by identifying applicable statutes, regulations, and judicial decisions related to assigned areas of U.S. regulatory compliance.
- Develop and provide training to company personnel on relevant substantive legal topics, such as export control.
- Review potential activities for certain countries to ensure compliance with all applicable sanctions and embargoes, collaborating as required with other company personnel responsible for jurisdictions outside of the U.S.
- Conduct internal assessments of applicable areas of U.S. regulatory compliance.
- Conduct internal investigations related to any alleged infractions or violations of U.S. regulatory requirements as well as in support of Corning’s Corporate Compliance Program (e.g., alleged violations of Corning’s Code of Conduct)
- Review, assist in drafting, and approve export licenses. Consult with and oversee work by outside counsel as required in support of U.S. regulatory requirements.
- Provide other support for Corning’s Corporate Compliance Program as required.
Travel Requirements: Up to 10-15%, primarily domestically.
Required Education:
Juris Doctor Required Years and Area of Experience: 5-7 years of experience as a practicing attorney, either with a law firm or in a corporation. While some experience advising on applicable areas of U.S. regulatory compliance, particularly export controls, is preferred, we are also open to attorneys with general commercial and/or litigation experience who have an interest in learning about and advising on areas of regulatory compliance.
