JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Captain, Undersheriff and County Sheriff, the Deputy position entails general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property within Ford County. The Deputy position will be awarded to those who have successfully passed the promotional process. Duties include patrolling county areas, enforcing the law, securing compliance with traffic regulations and making preliminary investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger. The employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent discretion in meeting emergencies. Work is performed under the general supervision and job performance is reviewed for results through reports, inspections and instructions.

SCHEDULE OF PROMOTIONAL PROCESS

Assessment Exercises/Exam: May 25, 2022 at 0800hrs, at the Ford County Sheriff’s Office Class Room.

Board of Review: June 1, 2022 at 0800hrs, at the Ford County Sheriff’s Office Administration Board Room.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants shall be at least twenty-one (21) years of age, have a High School diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license and citizen of the United States. No felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If applicant does not currently reside in Ford County KS, upon being promoted to the position of deputy, applicant will have 180 days to move to Ford County, or deputy will have to leave take home vehicle at the Ford County Sheriff’s Office.

PROMOTIONAL PROCESS

Applicants for this position shall be scheduled by the Patrol Captain for assessment exercises/exam. The assessment exercises shall be administered by the Patrol Captain. The assessment exercises shall be weighted as (50%) fifty percent of the applicant’s final score. The assessment exercises shall be designed to measure the applicant’s qualifications to serve in the position.

Applicants that have successfully passed the assessment test will then be interviewed by a Board of Review made up by the Patrol Sergeants. The Sergeants shall then independently score each applicant on their answers to each question. These scores will be combined to give each applicant their final score for this section.

Applicants for this position shall have their personnel files reviewed for training, accommodations (both Office and citizen) and disciplinary action taken. The applicant’s immediate supervisor, when possible, shall be interviewed as to the applicant’s day to day performance.

Scores from the assessment exercises and the written exercise shall be combined with the Board of Review scores to establish an applicant’s final ranking. The Patrol Captain shall provide the Sheriff with the final ranked list. The Sheriff may gather information from a number of other sources to evaluate the top three ranked applicants to assist him in the selection of an applicant. These sources may include, but are not limited to, an applicant’s personnel records, applicant interviews, interviews with current or past supervisors, performance evaluations, and discussion with the Department’s command staff. The Sheriff may then select a successful applicant for promotion.
