Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Shop Foreman, the mechanic performs semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work on equipment and vehicles. This position involves responsibility for inspecting, evaluating, and reporting the mechanical condition of automotive and construction equipment and performing the required maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Work assignments are performed independently, although, there is daily consultation with the Shop Foreman concerning which projects to pursue.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience: Over one year of mechanical experience is required. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. College credit or technical certifications are preferred.
Skills: Knowledge of equipment and vehicle service and repair. Welding and mechanical aptitude. Ability to operate a motor grader, high loader, truck, welder, and other related equipment.
Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Problems involve keeping equipment operating properly and determining malfunctions in machinery.
Decision Making: Decision-making is limited to determining problems and causes of malfunctions in machinery and deciding the most appropriate repair method.
Accountability: The employee is not responsible for budgetary control and does not participate in the annual department budget process.
Supervision: Limited direct supervision is provided and work is reviewed occasionally by Superintendent. The employee yet has no supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.
Personal Relations: Occasional contact with other county departments and the general public.
Working Conditions: Manual labor and physical effort are required. Toxic fumes and adverse weather conditions are factors in this position.
