Under supervision of a GIS Manager or Department Director, the GIS Technician I provides departmental GIS support in the daily maintenance and presentation of geographic data.
Utilizes technical skills and commercial GIS software for data capture/conversion and maintenance of the departmental GIS. Captures data in different formats using electronic data recorders, global positioning system equipment, digitizer, and other means.
Performs spatial analysis of County GIS layers to affect a desired result in departmental applications and queries.
Creates and maintains data in spatial and tabular formats according to departmental or County GIS procedures. Is tasked with QA (Quality Assurance) duties to ensure validity and accuracy of departmental data layers.
Creates standard system products and cartographic presentations of GIS themes as directed by departmental or County staff.
An Associates degree is required, preferably in geography, computer science, engineering, technical drafting, a land-related discipline, or another field related to this position. Graduation from a specialized technical training program or high school diploma (or equivalent) may be accepted with sufficient additional practical experience. Must be able to supply written proof of completion for all course work and/or degrees that are being used to satisfy the minimum education requirements. Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Must have a minimum of six months relevant GIS experience.
