The Department of Waste Resources is seeking candidates to fill one Engineering Technician (ET)I/II opening within the Badlands Section of the Engineering/Operations Division. The level at which the position will be filled is at the Department's discretion and contingent on the candidate's experience and qualifications. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies. The work schedule for this position will be 9/80 or 4/10.
This position will report to the Principal Engineering Technician on the team and will be required to perform sub-professional civil engineering work of a technically specialized nature in connection with sanitary landfill design, construction, maintenance, operations, and permitting.
Work duties will include, but are not limited to, the following assignments: closed landfill site inspections; construction inspection of public works construction projects such as liner expansion, closure, earthwork and surface drainage, or building and other improvements projects; CADD mapping including GIS software applications; perform volume calculations using MicroStation and lnroads software; read, interpret, and plot field survey data to prepare topographic contour maps and grading and surface drainage plans; and prepare plans and cost estimates for public works construction projects under the direction of the Engineering staff.
Other work to be performed includes: land surveying such as topographic survey, taking horizontal and vertical measurements, and setting out construction stakes; daily landfill operation support and oversight including daily reporting, documentation, and maintaining records; perform QA/QC observation during placement of screened soil against the geosynthetic liner system for protection; construction coordination and documentation including preparation of daily construction activity reports, weekly progress meeting minutes, quantity measurements for progress payment preparation and construction scheduling; and various other technical reports; does other work as assigned.
Competitive candidates may possess experience in the fundamentals of civil engineering, surveying and construction inspection, applying the principles of civil engineering to construction, operation, and maintenance of waste-handling facilities (such as landfill sites), including mass earthwork projects, drainage improvements, and construction methods and equipment.
The department also desires experience in the following computer software applications: Arc-View GIS and MicroStation or AutoCAD. Also, intermediate to advanced experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Outlook, and Power Point.
Experience using the following survey equipment is desired: Trimble GPS equipment including Trimble Survey Controller software; and associated mapping software such as Inroads.
