July 2024 - 5% increase to base pay (2.75% Across-the-Board 2.25% Market Increase)
Recreational Therapists implement therapeutic recreation activities for clients, residents, patients and/or inmates in mental health, geriatric, rehabilitation and/or detention facilities; and to perform related work as required. A journey/lead-level class in the job series, the role plans, carries out, and evaluates a variety of recreational therapy activities. Recreation Therapists have first or second line supervisory responsibilities and performs administrative duties.
- Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team and provides therapy input for overall treatment approach.
- Plan, facilitate and monitor community and group recreation therapy meetings.
- Research and provide educational information.
- Demonstrate attention to the details.
- Foster a compassionate and respectful environment.
- Ability to navigate the uncomfortable.
- Passion working with clients in a detention/locked facility
- Certified or eligible for certification as a Registered Recreator with the California Board of Parks and Recreation Certification (CBPRC), or the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), in accordance with the California Administrative Code, Title 22, Section 71053(17). Certification by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) is also qualifying.

Condition of Employment
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
Background Investigation
Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test.
Evaluation
Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
