What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Electrician position at County of Santa Clara?
Under general direction, to lead and coordinate the daily activities of skilled Electricians; to perform journey-level electrician work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical wiring systems and equipment in County facilities.

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
- Receives work orders and assigns work to journey-level Electricians;
- Inspects the work of Electricians for progress and quality control;
- Assists in the performance evaluation of Electricians;
- Leads and performs skilled journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment;
- Confers with and advises Electricians on technical problems;
- Lays out electrical installations of various types and estimates labor and materials requirements;
- Assists in determining work methods and types of materials to be used;
- Orders and maintains stock of materials and supplies;
- Supervises the care and maintenance of tools and equipment;
- Ensures that code requirements, safety regulations, and safe work practices are observed;
- Prepares work progress and attendance reports;
- Installs transfer switches, junction boxes, conduit, conductors, circuit breakers, and transformers, and connects wires in breaker panels;
- Installs and modifies lighting fixtures, electrical outlets, and other electrical fixtures on remodeling projects;
- Installs electrical outlets, plugs, and switches to accommodate the installation of air conditioning equipment, exhaust fans, and generators;
- Rewires electric controls, regulating valves, electric doors, and alarm systems;
- Tests, maintains, and repairs automatic transfer switches, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, emergency generators and other back-up electrical equipment, switch gear, breakers, fans, and motors;
- Tests and repairs centrifuges, compressors, X-ray equipment, network clock systems, laundry equipment, industrial kitchen equipment, cooling tower motors, vacuum pumps, motor control centers, photovoltaic systems, pool and sewer pumps, automated arms, gates, sliding doors, and fluorescent lighting, including advanced lighting control systems and aviation lighting systems;
- Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical equipment, electrical circuity, and pneumatic tube systems, replacing components and electrical circuits, as necessary;
- Cleans, torques, tightens, and services electrical equipment;
- Replaces light bulbs, electric cords, plastic light shields, ballast, power supplies, receptacles, disconnects, and motor starters;
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
- Performs other related duties, as required.
Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to the successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for electricians,
or
Four (4) years of equivalent electrician training and/or electrician experience,
or
Possession of a valid Electrician Certification issued by the State of California,
AND
Four (4) years of journey-level electrician experience.
Special Requirements:
- Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
- Depending on departmental assignment, may be required to obtain and maintain Department of Correction Security Clearance to work in locked facilities throughout the term of employment.
- Depending on departmental assignment, may be required to complete annual training regarding patient care, personal protective equipment (PPE), and healthcare facility standards per the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI).
- *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSW), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.
Knowledge of:

- Prepare records and reports;
- Make accurate labor and materials cost estimates;
- Schedule and coordinate work assignments;
- Coordinate the maintenance of tools and equipment;
- Inspect and evaluate work for quality control and progress;
- Determine the most appropriate work methods and materials for each job;
- Perform journey-level electrician work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of various electrical systems;
- Operate computer applications as they relate to programming lighting control systems and programmable logic controllers;
- Understand and follow industry standards, practices, and regulations;
- Read and interpret plans, layouts, diagrams, and blueprints;
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.
- In accordance with Federal and State standards, work under the following conditions using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): dust, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, cramped quarters, and inadequate lighting.
- Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and grasp;
- Ability to ascend/descend ladders;
- Lift up to sixty (60) pounds;
- Will be placed on a rotating "on call" list for weekend and holiday coverage of County facilities. On call status requires being available and on-site within two (2) hours of notification.
