Full time grant funded benefitted position through September 30, 2025

Under general supervision, to provide lead direction and work coordination for other Nutrition Assistants; to screen, determine eligibility, conduct nutrition assessments, make client evaluations, and perform counseling for new applicants to the Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Program; to perform certifications and nutrition education for current program participants; to participate in outreach programs including breastfeeding encouragement and support to WIC families; to perform administrative support and record keeping; and to do related work as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the advanced working level and lead worker classification in the Nutrition Assistant class series.  Incumbents perform a variety of nutrition assessment, education, and screening duties in support of the WIC Program, as well as provide lead direction and work coordination for other staff. This class is distinguished from the Nutrition Assistant II in that incumbents either exercise lead responsibilities or perform the more complex work assignments.
 
Reports to
Nutritionist/Manager WIC, Nutrition/Lactation Coordinator, Program Manager,  and the Public Health Director.

Classifications Supervised
Provides lead direction and work coordination for Nutrition Support Specialist. 

Provides lead direction, work coordination, and training for other Nutrition Assistants; determines client eligibility from medical information, diet evaluation, income level, and residence information; performs nutrition assessments, evaluation, and counseling for new applicants and certification of current WIC program participants; may work with high risk clients; assists with educating WIC Program participants on specific topics; assists with one-to-one counseling sessions or group counseling; answers questions and screens prospective clients; makes client appointments; performs clinical duties, including printing food instruments, working with charting procedures, and making  referrals; performs client intakes, obtaining diet histories, taking height and weight measurements, and recording hematocrit/hemoglobin results in computer records at the clinic sites; assists with determining the need for new medication information; assists with the outreach program; maintains current information on Program changes; completes annual state requirements for nutrition and breastfeeding education, uses the computerized information system.

  • Eligibility requirements for participation in the WIC Program.
  • Good general nutrition practices.
  • Medical terminology applicable to the WIC Program.
  • Nutrition counseling and education techniques and procedures.              
  • Office methods and procedures.
  • Establishment of filing and information retrieval systems.
  • Computers and software used by the WIC Program.
  • Principles of work coordination and lead direction.

Skills Desired:

  • Provide lead direction, work coordination, and training for other staff. 
  • Assess and evaluate the needs of prospective and current WIC participants.
  • Provide nutrition counseling and education to WIC participants.
  • Make referrals of new and current WIC participants.
  • Perform a variety of WIC program support work.
  • Read and interpret a variety of rules, regulations, and information related to WIC Program eligibility and services.
  • Follow oral and written directions.      
  • Perform office and clinic duties associated with the WIC Program.
  • Use and safely operate a County vehicle.
  • Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Obtain factual information from applicants and recipients.
  • Deal tactfully and communicate with others from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effectively represent the WIC Program in contacts with the public, community organizations, and other government agencies.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training or experience that would provide the knowledge and skills to successfully perform the listed duties is qualifying.  A typical way, but not required, to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:

 -Two years of experience in working with a nutrition program at a level comparable to that of a Nutrition Support Staff with Siskiyou County.

 -A college degree in a health-related field and 6 months experience in a position comparable to a Nutrition Support Assistant.

 Completion of college level nutrition courses is desirable.

 Special Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid and appropriate driver’s license.

 

Typical Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; stool, kneel and crouch to pick up or move objects;  normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; physical ability to lift, push, carry,  and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including  telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX and clinical medical equipment and supplies; operate a County  vehicle in remote areas of the County.
 
Typical Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office, outdoor, and clinical environments; some work performed in a variety of weather conditions; exposure to communicable disease and potentially infectious fluids; continuous contact with other staff and the public.  An incumbent is required to travel to  outlying clinic sites.
