THIS RECRUITMENT IS PROMOTIONAL ONLY. YOU MUST PRESENTLY BE A FULL- OR PART-TIME REGULAR OR PROBATIONARY COUNTY OF SONOMA, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION, SONOMA COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS, OR SONOMA COUNTY WATER AGENCY EMPLOYEE IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION.

The Sheriff's Office has requested a department promotional certification to fill two Sheriff's Sergeant positions. Only qualified permanent and/or probationary Sheriff's Office employees on the eligible list may be eligible for referral to the department for the advertised positions. The employment list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time positions as they occur during the active status of the list.

The Sheriff’s Sergeants work on assigned shifts and under direction, supervises, directs, and participates in the work of a unit engaged in: patrol, investigation, in-service training, or other assigned law enforcement functions. Sheriff’s Sergeants may conduct detailed investigations of felonies and other major criminal matters, and perform related duties as required.

The Sheriff's Sergeants positions are the first supervisory level in the Deputy Sheriff series. Individuals promoted or newly hired into this job class shall serve a probationary period of one year.


TENTATIVE KEY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ORIENTATION AND TESTING DATES

  • Orientation: Tuesday, March 12, 2024, 9:00 AM - Patrol Briefing Room
  • Application Appraisal: Tuesday, April 2 or Wednesday, April 3, 2024
  • Testing: Wednesday, April 24 and/or Thursday, April 25, 2024

APPLICATION SUBMISSIONS REQUIRE THE SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE BE COMPLETED.

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable General Education Development Certificate and possession of a basic Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) of the State of California. (A course in supervision must be successfully completed not later than 18 months after employment.)

Experience: Three years of recent, full-time, paid experience as a law enforcement officer with a city, county, state or federal police agency. (Experience as a member of a police unit in the Armed Forces will not qualify.)

License: Possession of a valid California driver's license and a good driving record.

Background Requirement: Incumbents shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state, nor be under current formal probation supervision.

Citizenship Requirement: Permanent resident aliens who wish to be employed as peace officers must apply for citizenship at least one year before application for such employment. If a permanent resident alien has not obtained citizenship within three years after application for employment or is denied citizenship he or she shall be disqualified for peace officer status.Considerable knowledge of: the laws, ordinances, rules and regulations enforced by the department; modern principles and methods employed in crime detection and investigation and working knowledge of general police practices and techniques; court procedures in criminal and civil trials; the use and care of firearms; first aid methods and their applications; the geography and topography of Sonoma County.

Some knowledge of: the principles and practices applicable to the operation of modern county detention facilities.

Knowledge of: criminal attitudes and behavior patterns and the social factors underlying criminal behavior; recent developments, current literature and sources of information of criminal investigation procedures and police patrol practices; the principles and practices basic to the major areas of criminal identification, such as fingerprinting, ballistics and photography.

Ability to: obtain information through interviews, interrogation, and observation; plan, supervise, instruct and direct the work of subordinates; speak and write effectively; make quick, effective, and reasonable decisions in emergencies and take appropriate action; enforce the law firmly, tactfully and impartially and deal courteously with the general public.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 

Being part of the Sheriff's Office and being expected to keep the public safe requires a thorough background investigation process. This process includes an assessment of prior work history, verifying educational experiences, court reports, public records searches, and understanding past patterns relating to drug usage, financial patterns, etc. This entails gathering a significant amount of information from job candidates and speaking to former employers, friends, family members, etc. Polygraphs, drug tests, and medical and physical examinations are also part of this process. Candidates must be honest and forthcoming about information that may arise during the background process. Deception during any portion of this process is grounds for disqualification, even after employment. This process can take anywhere from 3-5 months. Many factors are taken into consideration and one should not assume a credit issue or prior drug use is automatically disqualifying. Candidates will be given the opportunity to present mitigating information they feel should be considered.
