Definition
Learns and performs a variety of non-technical, para-professional social service support functions; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This class is distinguished from other social service support classes by the training and supervision required, and by the limited scope of independent actions they may exercise. While incumbents are supervised by a first line supervisor, they may receive training and direction from professional staff.
- Monitor court-ordered visits between children and parents and maintain comprehensive notes of those interactions for the assigned social worker. Observe and document behaviors during visitation, counsel clients to identify consistencies and confront inconsistencies in parenting practices, identify and address child and family functioning, and present alternatives to clients' problems to the social worker in order to support their case plans for the families;
- Partner with families and social workers to help families develop individual and family service plans utilizing skilled social work methods, principles, and practices and work alongside them to achieve their goals and desired outcomes;
- Follow up with the client on progress toward their parenting plan, redirect, and refocus the client on defined plan and goals when necessary to allow for positive and appropriate family interactions;
- Transport youth and families to visitations and medical appointments and alert their social worker of immediate concerns;
- Support various social workers with their calendar scheduling, filing court files, and acting as a scribe during field interviews and new detentions alongside the appointed social worker and law enforcement;
- Create service/court files:
- Request records (police, medical), etc. summarize records;
- Maintain drug test supplies and ordering
- Maintain forms/packets workers use in the field
- Utilize cms/cws to document
Experience: Six months of paid or unpaid experience working with children, the elderly, disabled, ill, or convalescent persons.
License
Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in work; understand and accept differences in human behavior; recognize need for service and secure appropriate assistance of resource; follow written and oral instructions; keep routine records and write routine reports; drive an automobile; motivate and train clients to improve standards of home and family management; analyze situations and take effective action; make basic arithmetical computations; learn and understand agency programs, policies and procedures and interpret them to clients and the public; relate to people in emotionally stressful situations and persons of varying cultural and economic backgrounds; read and write at the high school level; learn interviewing and problem solving techniques; be flexible in daily tasks; read a road map.
Incumbents in this class are expected to work inside buildings; to work either along or closely with others; to lift and carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds; to move about; to sit for long periods of time; to drive an automobile.
Medical Class
This class includes administrative or clerical positions requiring light physical effort, which may include frequent lifting of up to ten pounds and occasional lifting of up to twenty-five pounds. Ability to place or retrieve items at below waist level may be required. Considerable moving about may be involved.
