Facility Safety Coordinator

Position Description:
Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Facility Safety Coordinator will perform a varying range of responsibilities to minimize the risk of job-related accidents. The role will support a diverse assortment of safety projects, ensure best practices are implemented, affirm safety compliance requirements are met, and maintain the creation of a healthy and safe workplace.
Responsibilities:
- Provide an active leadership role in management of the facility's safety and health programs; and, motivate, educate, and enforce Covanta's safety and health policies.
- Conduct safety observations, audits, and reports, and follow up on outstanding matters.
- Educate employees on safety standards and expectations, including safe machine and equipment operations, and the administration of on-site certification for various mobile equipment.
- Perform safety training for new hires, conduct contractor safety briefings, and maintain and coordinate external vendor training for the facility's Quick Response and Confined Space teams.
- Manage contractor safety and health performance with facility management;ensure contractors are properly trained, use appropriate tools and equipment, and protect all employees from injury.
- Prepare and deliver monthly safety-related training to multiple departments.
- Coordinate and schedule annual medical surveillance exams, annual respirator fit testing, noise, lead and industrial hygiene sampling, and annual emergency evacuation drills.
- Investigate on-site accidents and identify possible causes of the incident.
- Assist with preparing OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program's annual report, uphold the standards required for recertification.
- Maintain documentation of the Company's safety procedures, accidents, tailgate meetings, and other related administrative requirements and events.
- Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace.
- Demonstrate a personal commitment to safety and health excellence.
Position Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a safety and health or science-related discipline.
Experience:
- Practical knowledge of OSHA 1910 and related local safety and health regulations.
- At least three years' safety experience in the operations and maintenance of a heavy industrial environment, preferably in power plant or energy-from waste facilities.
Other:
- Willing to work evenings and weekends on a non-routine basis, when required, to support facility operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Articulate communicator with excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Organized, team player who is an effective influencer.
- Proficient with Microsoft applications that include Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with implementing occupational safety and health training programs.
Physical Demands:
- Physical Aptitude - Perform tasks that require the ability to exert light to moderate physical effort which may involve lifting, walking, climbing, carrying, pushing and/or pulling objects of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Must be able to wear a full- or half-face respirator.
- Sensory Requirements - Some tasks may require the ability to observe and recognize colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, and textures. Numerous tasks require visual perception and judgment.
- Environmental Factors - Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, and working at heights.
