Heart Cath Lab:
The mission of the Heart Catheterization Laboratory is to provide a comprehensive quality of care approach for individuals requiring emergency and non-emergency cardiovascular procedures.
The Heart Catheterization Laboratory offers the services of diagnostic and interventional coronary procedures, diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology procedures, cardiac device implant procedures, and diagnostic and interventional peripheral vascular procedures.
We perform procedures in 2 electrophysiology rooms, 3 heart cath labs, 1 peripheral vascular lab, and the hybrid operating room are all part of the Parkwest Heart Cath Lab. Staff members are expected to learn all roles within their scope of practice to allow for greater staffing flexibility and enhanced productivity.
Our expert cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons work very closely with highly trained RNs, RTs, and registered cardiovascular invasive specialists (RCIS) to deliver excellent patient care.
Our team members work Monday – Friday, and we run call teams on weekends and holidays.
We offer a variety of work schedules ranging from five 8 hour shifts, four 10 hour days, and three-12 hour shifts with on call required
Position Summary:
Provides nursing services to Cardiac Catheterization Lab patients in accordance with established nursing standards and practices; sets-up electrical and hemodynamic transducers and amplifiers; records and obtains hemodynamic, electrical and angiographic data; assesses patient during invasive cardiac procedures and delivers therapy as required. Coordinates patient care with other health care professionals.

Responsibilities
- Prepares patient and equipment for catheterization procedures by preparing site of entry, draping patient, arranging sterilized instruments and catheters, and calibrating and setting-up pressure transducers and tubing.
- Obtains and records hemodynamic, electrical, and angiographic data by operating hemodynamic and electrical amplifiers and digital and line fluoroscopic equipment.
- Attends to patient needs during cardiac studies.
- Develops and contributes to a plan of nursing care for the patient.
- Administers intravenous and oral medications to patients.
- Assists in the collection of arterial and venous blood samples and respiratory gases.
- Precepts/trains new employees/students in the techniques of cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology.
- Monitors patient’s vital signs during and after cardiovascular procedures.
- Participates in life-saving measures such as defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Completes nursing history if appropriate.
- Assesses learning needs of patient and family, develops and initiates teaching plan.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members.
- Possesses clinical expertise and knowledge of unit to resolve complex physician issues without oversight or supervision.
- Responds appropriately and timely to patients, physicians and other customer’s needs.
- Provides 9 credit hours of in-service per year.
- Serves as a member of an established active hospital or department committee or subcommittee with 75% participation in meetings.
- Functions as a role model to peers by cross-training other departments and serving as a resource person.
- Completes department specific checklist and any additional requirements as needed.
- Performs a variety of special projects and assignments relating to primary responsibility.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
None specified; however, must be sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of the below indicated license and/or certification as required by the issuing authority.
Minimum Experience:
Three (3) years of Cath Lab experience required and clinical expertise and knowledge for structural heart, high risk PTCI, peripheral vascular, carotid intervention, T-car, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac ablations, and cardiac resynchronization management as demonstrated by observation and documented on a competency checklist.
Licensure Requirement:
Valid RN license with State of TN; ACLS and CPR certification required.
