Summary
The Lead Accountant manages the daily operations of the accounting function for the Covenant Health corporation. Management includes the monitoring and analyzation of accounting data and producing period end financial reports or statements. Accountant enforces proper GAAP accounting methods, policies and principles to safeguard organizational assets.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
- Responsible for the full month end and year end close for Covenant Corporate, ensuring financial statements are fairly stated.
- Prepares month end standard and general journal entries and posts into the ERP system.
- Analyzes expenses comparing actual to budget and provides explanations for variance fluctuations. Serves as key point contact for department heads in regards to actual to budget variances.
- Submission of complete financial package to Management for Covenant Corporate to include Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss and Cash Flow.
- Manages and reports statistical information to management monthly.
- Responsible for daily management of Covenant Health cash activity, cash funding and reports cash status updates to Covenant Health leadership.
- Key Contact for external auditors for interim and year-end audit for Covenant Corporate; prepares audit schedules and footnotes as assigned and interacts with auditors as necessary.
- Oversees the financial recording of net assets with donor restrictions.
- Manages general ledger account balances and reconciles balances on timely basis.
- Creates and maintains billing system within MS Dynamics to track outgoing invoices and payments received from the subsidiaries for membership fees and other costs.
- Maintains and safeguards accounting records for Covenant Health.
- Manages the expense reimbursement function of Covenant Health.
- Responsible for daily creation, dissemination, and reconciliation of assigned responsibilities on the SJN cash report.
- Completes reconciliation of SJN, SJH Corporate and CHS bank statements on monthly basis.
- Reports both SJN and CHS Unclaimed Property to the appropriate states for assigned companies.
- Creates the monthly SJH Corporate Services internal financial statements, including analysis and ensures accuracy of said statements.
- Supports Accounts Payable and Payroll with processes as needed.
- Completes tax returns and surveys as required.
- Practices continuous performance improvement regarding processes in Finance.
- Must adhere to deadlines as well as an attention to accuracy.
- Other duties as consistent with this role.
Job Requirements
Job Knowledge and Skills
- Requires solid management skills, working knowledge of GAAP with strong financial analysis skills and critical thinking.
- Possesses advanced Excel skills and is proficient in other Microsoft applications.
- Experience with Accounting and ERP software systems.
- Incumbent will be self-directed and require little oversight in performance of duties.
- Lead Accountant will possess excellent inter-personal skills to work with others successfully.
- Requires analytical and conceptual thinking ability, team building ability, with an emphasis on performance and achievement.
- Requires ability to affect change management, and commitment to customer-focused management of services.
- Requires attention to detail, meeting deadlines, organizational skills and accuracy.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Finance or Accounting required
- Master’s Degree in Business management or Health Care a plus
An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position that involves a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs. Some stress related to high level of responsibility for quality care.
