The DLC Youth Engagement Specialist (DLC-YES)- is responsible for providing the delivery of care and services to the youth in the Youth Engagement Center with absolute respect and unconditional love.

The DLC- YES staff must create opportunities for building community amongst young people that is inclusive and affirming, ensuring young people feel welcomed, seen, heard and valued. The DLC YES staff would encourage individuals to integrate wellness activities and skills into their daily life and to teach youth to get balance for body, mind and spirit. Must be flexible in schedule to align with the availability of youth.

* This position is a one year grant funded position which may or may not be renewed.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Participate in Community Resiliency Model Training (CRM) as a train the trainer participant.
  • Facilitate and share knowledge of the CRM model with youth and CHNJ staff.
  • Create programming that supports de-escalation, conflict-resolution, problem-solving, impulse control, and anger and/or stress management.
  • Develop programming that builds skill that protect youth from risky behaviors such as fighting, substance use and other high risk activities.
  • Create fun and engaging social activities that foster community and non-violent options for youth.
  • Assist and/or co-facilitate groups for youth that foster safe space.
  • Create a shared calendar that publishes all youth activities and groups to promote rigorous youth engagement.
  • Provide outreach to individuals at highest risk to be involved in violence or live in high crime areas.
  • Provide referrals to other Community-based Violence Intervention Programs.
  • Document all contacts with youth consistently and accurately into ETO.
  • Attend all required staff meetings.
  • Represent Covenant House New Jersey to the media, public officials, community leaders, etc. on strategies to prevent gun violence and improve services to our community.
  • Participate in violence prevention efforts and gang violence de-escalation with other providers and experts in the field.
  • Answer all emails, phone calls and calendar invites in a timely fashion.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Experience and Skills:
  • Demonstrated commitment working with diverse populations of youth 18-24 and a knowledge of urban youth issues, specifically community violence.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ background working with young people (ages 14- 24) that are at the highest risk to be involved in violence.
  • Experience in facilitating small groups or coaching is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Atlantic City neighborhoods are strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have strong communication and organizational skills, and possess the ability to communicate effectively with staff members, youth, partner organizations and the public.
  • Punctual, extremely reliable, highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Candidate must be computer literate.
  • Must be available to work weekends.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; B.A. or B.S. preferred.
  • Applicants with personal experience in overcoming violence/ violence-related injuries/ the criminal justice system are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License with an insurable driving record and ability to safely and effectively operate a 12 passenger van.
