The VP of Software Engineering will lead global engineering teams tasked will transforming how the organization leverages technology. In this role, you will build robust, scalable, high availability platforms and products to deliver customer experiences in a highly collaborative and fast paced environment.
As an influential senior technology leader, you will be expected to drive strategic direction and tactical execution on product initiatives with significant bottom-line impact. This role will be a key leader of talented software engineering and technologist teams able to drive / deliver cutting edge innovation that will transform the animal healthcare industry.
In this role you will devise clear technology roadmaps to fruition; will need to think strategically and dive deep; as well as identify opportunities to leverage the most appropriate technology solutions to solve scalable product / customer needs.
Responsibilities
- Accountable for new software product development and enhancements, maintenance of existing software products, and engineering support for commercial software products
- Drive alignment with global product management: develop supporting software engineering roadmap, architecture artifacts, and delivery strategy for product engineering solutions
- Co-create a strategic vision for external developer / partner facing highly available platforms, products, and services
- Participates in prioritization of technology initiatives and conjunction with peer technology leaders: accurately track initiative status, costs, and all projects related to engineering systems (hosting, partner agreements, training, systems, etc.)
- Collaborate with global product management, IT, external partners, and all technology roles to drive implementation of robust platform capabilities and experiences
- Lead and facilitate product engineering design, architecture and code review to ensure compliance with standards
- Take complex ideas and concepts, and visualize them in ways such that they are communicated effectively and compellingly for internal leaders, partners and customers, thereby building strong partnerships, consensus and alignment
- Create and drive software engineering process and management structure for offshore and onshore teams
- Provide hands-on technical leadership to a dynamic global team throughout the software development life cycle
- Manage and appropriately escalate delivery impediments, risks, issues, and changes tied to the engineering initiatives to stakeholders
- Ensure adherence to continuous improvement practices as required to meet quality / time / reliability to business and product imperatives
- Support on-call response to critical operational issues; be able to work beyond normal hours and support implementation transition activities and shifts as needed
- Identify recurring product engineering problems and build the tools / processes to prevent problems reoccurrence
- Lead software engineering teams to use and build tools / processes to help quickly triage production issues and identify the component(s) that need to be fixed
- Technical Leadership: ability to inspire customers, peers and teammates to think outside the box to deliver high quality software and technology solutions
- Produce software engineering metrics / measure performance and improvement
- Recruit, motivate, mentor, and lead great software engineering leaders and team talent
- Create and implement training and development plans for team members and managers
- Influence with a strong positive attitude: Drive consensus across cross functional leaders and teams
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement in delivery process and engineering practices
- Ability to perform well under pressure and be resourceful in meeting our internal and external deadlines
- In partnership with peers and CTO, responsible for the development of the annual department budget and capital expenditure plans in alignment with department projects and business goals
Experience
- 10 years demonstrated experience managing technology teams and software engineering, with proven ability to coach and develop employees
- 10 years of professional experience in the field of software engineering and technology operations
- Strong preference to global software engineering leadership experience, resulting in positive outcomes
- A proven passion for building, leading and growing high performing teams in the development and rapid delivery of next-generation digital platform and products

- Required knowledge and understanding of technical architecture, application systems design and integration in a large heterogeneous enterprise environment with hands-on experience in cloud-based environments (Azure, AWS, or Google), SOA, Angular/Node/React, Java/J2EE, XML, Apache Tomcat, Rules Engine, Oracle or MySQL database methodologies, and containerization
- Experience working with open-source code and SaaS product frameworks / implementations
- Experience with modern monitoring capabilities including APM (ex. New Relic, AppDynamic, dynatrace) as well as other instrumentation / orchestration technologies
- Experience creating web architecture designs that incorporate resiliency and performance
- Experience with cloud-based platform and SaaS product implementations
- Experience with relevant project management methodologies (e.g. Agile, waterfall, etc)
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity and the determination to implement robust and secure coding techniques
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast paced, unstructured global environment
- Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to interact and build strong partnerships across matrixed organizational boundaries
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in math / computer science / engineering / science discipline or equivalent work experience is required. Master's Degree or certifications desirable
- Agile methodology, software engineering project management, product management, and cloud-based architectural framework and development education / certification strongly preferred
