Purpose
This is a mid-level coaxial cable passive splicing role where the incumbent is responsible for the installation/splicing of passive devices, conducting passive device testing, and troubleshooting of passive devices as related to a Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) network. Working under general supervision, he/she ensures the passive network meets company performance standards and effectively troubleshoots all radio frequency (RF) issues of moderate complexity within the passive portion of a HFC network.
Major Tasks
- Installs and repairs passive equipment within the HFC distribution system, including customer premises.
- Splices/activates overhead/underground coaxial cables and assembles the necessary equipment per the design print. This includes the cutting and preparation of the required coaxial cable prior to actual splicing.
- Performs troubleshooting and repair activities of moderate complexity on passive portion of the HFC network. This will include all passives, coaxial cable, connectors, coaxial jumpers, and temporary splicing repairs.
- Responds to issues identified in the passive portion of a HFC network by company performance tools. Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves associated issues of moderate complexity, referring more complex issues for higher level service.
- Learns to activate the RPD node by understanding the RF level measurement, transmit levels and AC/DC measurements associated with a node.
- Performs tap and end-of-line RF level checks to identify and verify tap RF levels meet Cox’ specifications.
- Identifies issues in the passive portion of a HFC network by: checking for forward and return signal transmission; measuring signal leakage, ingress, and noise, and evaluating power supply issues.
- Utilizes test equipment and other diagnostic tools (e.g., notebook computers, digitized system maps) to resolve network distribution problems.
- Effectively and correctly uses a SLM to make RF measurements and understands the meaning of each measurement.
- Operates a VOM to check AC/DC and makes resistance measurements in a HFC network.
- Utilizes coaxial splicing hand tools in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Ensures all needed/issued tools, parts, materials and equipment are available at the job site and reconciled daily to ensure accurate material usage.
- Consults with other internal work teams to resolve plant issues.
- Checks power supply AC and node RF output levels to ensure they are in good working order, reporting problems where necessary.
- May be called upon to perform daily monitoring and documentation for CLI compliance per FCC requirements, which could result in repairing leakage to resolve problems.
- May perform quality assurance field checks of other splicing activity.
- Reads and interprets system prints including system design maps and digital drawings.
- Works various shifts, including nights and weekends, when necessary.
- Completes daily production reports and provides status information throughout the day.
- Marks-up maps, tracks work hours and complete “as-built maps” for areas built.
- Operates vehicle and/or bucket lift safely, following all safety and traffic regulations
Qualifications:
Required
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience.
- 2-5 years of experience in coaxial splicing and troubleshooting
- Specialized skill training/certification may be required.
- Basic understanding of AC/DC electricity and RF designs
- Knowledge of and experience with various coaxial splicing tools and equipment
- Required to lift a minimum of 75lbs.
- Capable of handling and work off an extension ladder in various conditions and heights, including the removal and mounting of the ladder on the vehicle rack.
- Required to climb utility poles, use ladders, and utilize truck-mounted lift bucket to complete daily construction assignments as needed
- Required to wear all or any required safety equipment that is required to safely do the job at hand
