What are the responsibilities and job description for the Small Business Architect position at Cox?
Cox Communications is searching for a Small Business Architect who will reside in the Connected Home Engineering group. The Connected Home Engineering group is responsible for designing network solutions for residential and business customers that deliver state of the art internet, video, automation, security, and voice products. These designs draw on a variety of devices including modems, small routers & gateways, WiFi extenders, video clients, sensors, and control panels, as well as a variety of physical media including coaxial cable (DOCSIS, MoCA), fiber (PON), WiFi, Ethernet, and Zigbee. Cox’s Commercial customers have special needs that are often distinct from residential customers, for example requiring higher degrees of resiliency (e.g. battery & cellular backup), more feature-rich WiFi offerings serving their own enterprise as well customers, advanced network services requiring VPN or GRE Tunneling options, and more advanced customer & support portals.
As a Small Business Architect, you will have a focus on Cox’s smaller commercial customers whose premises may be in either commercial properties or homes.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- The role will primarily be responsible for providing high-level designs that fulfill near- and long-term roadmaps developed by Product Management colleagues across a variety of products and customer segments. You should utilie thorough technical knowledge of networking technologies on all layers of the 7-layer OSI stack model, and familiarity with the APIs and tools used by Service Providers to integrate network assets into Operations and Business Service Systems for device provisioning, configuration management, support operations, and billing.
- As a Small Business Architect you will often analyze the pros and cons of various tradeoffs factoring into decisions, e.g. when to utilize existing infrastructure that may be less efficient than new systems, allow for more immediate delivery.
- You will frequently be called upon to speak with a strong voice to advocate for your recommendations but also willing to work tirelessly to build consensus amongst an array of different stakeholders who may have competing priorities or opinions, utilizing your strong critical thinking, persuasion, and communications skills.
- As a Small Business Architect you will also frequently help Product Management and Engineering peers draft detailed business and technical requirements for new products & features, draft Requests for Proposal, participate in industry trade & standards groups, collaborate with vendors, advise peers on test methodologies, and occasionally perform hands-on proof of concept testing.
Qualifications:
Minimum:

- 8 or more years of experience required in related field (i.e. technical solutions design, IT Development, Engineering, etc.) in the telecommunications industry (service provider, manufacturers, developers.)
- 5 or more years of experience are required if the candidate possesses a related advanced degree such as in Engineering or Computer Science
- The complexity of the products and solutions that are the focus of this position will require that the Small Business Architect to be able to multi-task, work adeptly in cross-functional teams, and manage workflows using methodologies such as Agile.
- Experience in transitioning service provider Product Management business requirements and roadmaps into technical designs, architectures, and release schedules, especially in an Agile framework.
- Experience with DOCSIS and PON transport technologies.
- Expertise in Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking designs
- Expertise in state of the art WiFi transmission
- Strong understanding of how higher network layers factor into overall service and product delivery, especially protocols such as DHCP, DNS, and tunneling protocols such as VPNs and GRE.
- Experience with common command and control protocols and methods used by service providers for device configuration & monitoring, such as SNMP, TR-69, WebPA.
- Experience with Voice over IP technology, especially for business services
Preferred:
- Experience with Cellular technologies
- Basic coding or scripting experience especially Python.
- Familiarity with MoCA technologies.
- Experience with Security/Surveillance and Automation products & their technologies (cameras, sensors, remotes, ZigBee, etc.)
