Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary Washington University Department of Orthopedic Surgery seeks an advanced practice provider (nurse practitioner, physician assistant) to cover emergency department and inpatient consults and patient management, operative cases in an first assistant role, and assist floor team as needed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The ideal candidate will have experience in orthopedic patient care and be interested in a busy clinical care environment. The role will provide close interactions with attending physicians and trainees and a mix of independent and supervised responsibilities. The candidate will provide specialty orthopedic care in a variety of settings, working under physician oversight as required by state regulation, and functions within the scope of practice defined by the candidate’s specialty certification, hospital medical by-laws, and, where it exists, the collaborative practice agreement. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities Utilizes a high degree of knowledge, skill and competence to coordinate, manage, and evaluate the delivery of quality patient care. Serves as a role model, mentor, and preceptor for others, including trainees. Enters into a formal collaborative practice agreement with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and its physician(s) to support the orthopedic practice. Position provides primary and/or specialty nursing and/or medical care in a variety of settings; works under physician oversight as required by state regulation, and functions within the scope of practice defined by the APP’s specialty certification, BJH medical by-laws, and, where it exists, the collaborative practice agreement. Manages health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources; may perform diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification and state regulations. May bill for services covered by collaborative practice agreement. Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options and community resources. Monitors/ensures accuracy of patient medical records, maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with established clinic and hospital standards. Provides services as needed for clinical research studies; monitors participating subjects, including medication administration and family/patient education. Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Regularly participates in quality and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care. Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops. Assists with Barnes-Jewish Hospital inpatient/ED care, such as: Triage consults in ED, ED procedures such as casting, splinting, and injections, and Inpatient floor tasks including dressing changes and drain pulling. Covers the BJH OR in a first assistant role as needed; this will usually be at least once per week (i.e., Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm), and also when residents or fellows are absent for vacation or leave. Assists with transitions of care from day to night team for floor/ED consults. Schedule Monday-Friday, Day/Evening, 12 hour shifts. No nights, weekends, or holidays. Preferred Qualifications Holds current certification in patient care field and required specialty. Required Qualifications Nurse Practitioner Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program. Advanced Practical Nurse licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire. Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty. Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirements). Or Physician Assistant Graduate of PA program. Current PA licensure to practice in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois depending on location or ability to obtain within three months of date of hire. Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty. Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements). Grade S30 Salary Range $84,600.00 - $152,300.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
