THE SENIOR HIGHWAY ENGINEER AT CPL
The Senior Highway Engineer provides oversight for the development of highway design projects, working closely with CPL’s roadway, bridge, civil, planning, and environmental teams throughout the design process. Reporting to a Transportation Project Manager or Principal, (or even being the Transportation Project Manager!) your daily responsibilities encompass anything from planning for bicycle lanes and implementing road signage to conducting feasibility studies, setting horizontal and vertical alignments, and performing design and estimate calculations. You take great pride in your work, knowing it will help connect – and thereby better – communities and facilitate access on a personal scale.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
- You have a strong comprehension of the design guidelines, standards and specifications of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT)
- You have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, MicroStation, InRoads (and/or OpenRoads), and perhaps ACAD, Civil 3D
- You’re familiar with intersection, pavement marking and signing design
- You can work as part of a team and have strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- You earned a BS in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited institution
- You have at least five (5) years of engineering design experience, with an emphasis on transportation engineering
- You maintain professional licensure in New York State
- Previous experience with NYSDOT or locally administered federal aid (LAFA) is a plus
CORE DUTIES
- Prepare and design plans for new and/or rehabilitated transportation systems or parts of systems
- Identify roadway problems and recommend methods and modifications that can improve service life and safety
- Ensure conformity to engineering standards and practices by reviewing construction plans, design calculations and cost estimates
- Evaluate plans and proposals by other engineers, making modifications as needed
- Prepare design reports that are administrative, technical or statistical in nature
- Assist the Project Manager in the preparation of budgets, schedules and/or specifications for labor or materials for each project
- Estimate costs for transportation projects
- Coordinate with contractors, utility companies and/or government agencies concerning plans, work schedules or specifications
- Supervise and mentor junior team members
