Engineering Technician - Materials Testing

We are seeking a highly skilled and certified technician to join our team as a Soil and Concrete Materials Testing Technician with ACI and Cal Trans certifications. In this role, you will be responsible for performing advanced materials testing on soils and concrete samples, ensuring compliance with industry standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements set forth by Cal Trans. Your expertise and certifications will play a critical role in verifying the quality, strength, and durability of construction materials, contributing to the success and safety of infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive laboratory and field tests on soil samples to evaluate properties such as moisture content, density, compaction, permeability, and California bearing ratio (CBR) in accordance with Cal Trans guidelines.
  • Perform advanced tests on concrete samples, including compressive strength, slump, air content, and specific gravity, following ACI standards and protocols.
  • Prepare samples for testing, ensuring proper specimen handling, curing, and storage methods are adhered to per established procedures.
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated testing equipment and instruments, ensuring calibration and accuracy of results.
  • Record, analyze, and interpret test data accurately, maintaining detailed documentation and reporting findings to project managers, engineers, and regulatory authorities as required.
  • Collaborate with project teams to prioritize and complete testing tasks within project timelines, providing technical expertise and recommendations as needed.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment and mitigate potential hazards during testing operations.
  • Assist in managing inventory of testing materials, supplies, and equipment, and coordinate with procurement for replenishment as necessary.
  • Stay abreast of industry developments, advancements in testing methodologies, and changes in regulatory requirements to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, including quality control inspections, audits, and proficiency testing, to uphold the highest standards of materials testing.

Qualifications:

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification and Cal Trans certification for soils and concrete materials testing.
  • Proven experience in conducting advanced materials testing, preferably in a construction or engineering setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of soil mechanics, concrete technology, ACI and Cal Trans standards, and testing procedures.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and communicate technical data effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and proficiency in documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in using relevant software for data analysis, reporting, and equipment calibration.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform fieldwork, lift heavy samples, and operate testing equipment as required.
