Summary/Objective
The Fitter assembles, fits, and fabricates steel components as needed for the production goals of the company. Must be able to pass a certification test. The Fitter should be detail-oriented, focused and adept at interpreting blueprints. Ultimately an exceptional fitter should be able to safely use hand and power tools as well as demonstrate excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Essential Functions

  • Proven experience working as a fitter
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings and measurements to plan layouts
  • Analyze the blueprints for mechanical systems to determine the specifications of the components to be constructed
  • Set up components for welding according to specifications to construct structural components from raw materials
  • Operate shears, power saws, angle grinders, cutting torches and chipper knives as needed
  • Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces
  • Weld steel components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead) to fuse structural components
  • Repair and maintain all machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps
  • Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws
  • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety
  • Use specialized machinery for industrial welding and oversee machines that perform the same job
  • Assess welded surfaces, structures and components to identify errors
  • Follow strict safety regulations
  • Monitor machinery for appropriate usage and temperature
  • Additional duties as assigned per management

Work Environment

Duties of this position will be performed primarily in the shop. The noise level in the work environment and various job sites can be loud and may require hearing protection. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt. The shop has no air conditioning throughout the year. Required to wear all Company-issued safety gear on the jobsite as outlined by the Company safety policies.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Shop duties could require lifting heavy objects, walking, sitting, balancing, and standing for long periods of time. The employee might be required to lift, push, pull or carry objects, climb, bend, or twist. Sometimes lifts items up to 60 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

This position is classified as Safety Sensitive. A Safety Sensitive position is one in which job performance can affect the safety of the employee and others. An employee's inability or impaired ability to perform these job-related tasks could result in a direct threat to their safety and/or the safety of others. This position is Safety Sensitive, therefore all Federal and State laws regarding the use of any drugs must be followed.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of welding experience
  • Welding certification from an accredited institution
