SUMMARY:
The Safety Field Intern is responsible for general administrative support to the Safety Department including tasks of data entry and report compilation. The Safety Field Intern will conduct daily jobsite safety inspections throughout the Southwest Michigan region and compile reports based on observations. This role is responsible for safety functions necessary to support all project teams and safety team personnel.
The Safety Field Intern reports directly to the Safety Manager.
This position will require computer work, phone, and E-Mail communication. Physical requirements can vary depending on the responsibility of the tasks. 80 percent of the time is limited physical activity, 20 percent may be required to lift up to 50 lbs., and walking long distances, working in the elements, climbing ladders, and inspecting elevated surfaces will be required. 80 percent travel throughout the SW Michigan region is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct jobsite safety inspections; compile analysis report based on observations
- Assist in the update of various aspects and responsibilities in the EHS System – including data entry, running reports from such data entered and interpreting results
- Attend and participate Safety Roundtable meetings
- Assist in review of subcontractor safety programs for completeness and compliance with CSM’s policies
- Assist in promoting safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all State, Federal, and Local regulations and owner/contractual requirements
- Assist in conducting jobsite and work area inspections with the Safety Specialist. Review with Project Manager for distribution to subcontractors
- Assist in maintaining safety records, including training records, maintenance of the OSHA log, incident investigations, and metrics
MINIMUM REQUIRMENTS:
- 1 to 2 years’ field experience
- Working towards a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Behavioral Science, Environmental Health and Safety, or Construction Management
- Microsoft Office Suite of products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.)
Highly valued, but not required
- OSHA 30 certification
- Jobsite Experience (residential or commercial)

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. The employee must also occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently inspect the project and may be exposed to ongoing construction and various weather conditions. Work environment involves moderate risks which may require safety precautions. The noise level in the work environment may range from quiet to loud. The proper use of Personnel Protective Equipment will be required on the jobsite.
