Summary/Objective
Horticulture is a signature element of the owner’s business and it is a significant differentiating factor in the marketplace for his company. Therefore, the ability for the Estate Gardener/Horticulturist to maintain this property as a horticultural showpiece is essential.
Essential Functions

Maintain and evolve the property landscapes to the highest possible horticultural standards including, but not limited to moving plants, layout, planting, transplanting, staking, weeding, mowing, edging, fertilizing, watering/irrigation, pinching, deadheading, grooming, flower arranging, pruning, mowing, path maintenance, snow removal, and winterizing tasks

Perform routine plant health care including soil testing, soil amendments, and implementation of appropriate care strategies.

Perform scouting, documenting, and treatments as needed

Perform seasonal projects, such as stone edging and stone flagging repair, pond and stream maintenance, and outdoor furniture cover and care

Safely operate vehicles and light equipment such as mowers, power tools, saws, blowers, and leaf vacuum

Perform or be willing to learn routine maintenance and proper cleaning equipment

Perform groundskeeping duties which require physical activities that include considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials

Interact in a polite, helpful, and positive fashion with the owner, the family, and their guests

Design and implement seasonal planting schemes for containers and beds

Select, source, procure and purchase plants, supplies and materials such as trees, shrubs, seeds, mulch, soil and garden tools and equipment

Care and maintenance of turf, forested, and other non-landscaped areas

Perform (or be willing to learn) simple irrigation maintenance and repairs, as well as landscape lighting maintenance and repair.

Report larger issues to others for required repairs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Operational knowledge of mechanical equipment and systems (lawnmowers, hydrostatic mowers, manual mowers, riding mowers, rakes, shovels, spreaders, chainsaws, electric clippers, pruning saws, and hand tools)

Manual dexterity, static strength, and stamina to withstand working in all weather conditions and exertion over long periods of time

Ability to keep sensitive information highly confidential

Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work professionally with clients, vendors, and co-workers on the phone and in person

Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to take initiative, use good judgment, demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and attention to detail, and carry multiple projects through to completion

Ability to work independently, prioritize work and ask for further clarification when necessary

Ability to work under pressure with tight time constraints, as well as the ability to deal with frequent interruptions, unresolved situations, frequent change, delays, or unexpected events

Demonstrated knowledge of Zone 6 & 7 ornamental landscape plants

Required Education and Experience

Associates degree in horticulture or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience

2 years related experience required

Must be able to pass a criminal background check

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license

Able to work independently or in a highly collaborative environment, embracing teamwork and high productivity

Bachelor's degree in horticulture or related field
