JOB SUMMARY
Provide prescribed medications and treatments to students at school as directed by physicians. Provide first aid and treatment in case of sudden illness or injury to students. Receive and maintain students’ school health records in accordance with state laws, regulations, and school board policies. Consult with school staff, parents, and healthcare providers on necessary treatments and health-related accommodations for students in the school environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Registered Nurse in Culpeper County Public Schools has duties and responsibilities that enhance the well-being of students. These duties and responsibilities include adherence to standards and regulations involving the school health program for the school system.
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Provide prescribed medications and treatments for students as directed by the student’s licensed heath care provider;
- Provide effective non-prescription medications and treatments for sudden illness or injuries to students as necessary and/or when permitted by parents;
- Document daily student interactions;
- Set and maintain standards of sanitation to prevent infections and the spread of disease;
- Respond to calls for emergencies to evaluate illness or injury of persons on school property;
- Obtain health care plans for students with a chronic or acute diagnosis of disease or injury from their licensed health care provider(s). Communicate health plans to appropriate staff to promote proper implementation;
- Store all medications securely and properly;
- Maintain up-to-date student medication administration permission forms;
- Provide health screenings of students as required by state law, regulations, and school board policies;
- Participate as necessary in Section 504 plan and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings for students with health conditions;
- Receive and maintain records of immunizations and school entrance physicals of students according to state laws, regulations, and school board policies. Track status of conditionally enrolled students;
- Complete student health or other work-related reports or surveys for the Virginia Health Department, Virginia Department of Education, or the School Division;
- Communicate with parent/guardian regarding health concerns of their children and with licensed healthcare providers as permitted by parent;
- When conditions warrant, refer students for assistance from school administration, school counselor, mental health agency, or licensed health care provider;
- Disseminate pertinent health condition information of students to selected staff within the proper bounds of confidentiality;
- Provide specific health-related in-services and trainings to staff based on their job function.
- Provide health instruction to students as circumstances may require;
- Participate in registration events for preschool and Kindergarten students. (Elementary schools only);
- Attend school or school division meetings as required;
- Participate in periodic school or community events as required; and
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal, School Division Nurse Coordinator or Executive Director of Student Services; and

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Current valid Registered Nurse License in the Commonwealth of Virginia;
- Current certification in the American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), American Red Cross First Aid and Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) use;
- Knowledge of health privacy laws, professional ethics, and standards of conduct;
- Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in the central office and throughout the division. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment exposes the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, and parents is required. Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. To ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization, employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.

The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
