What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shift Captain-Night Shift position at Danville Life Saving Crew?

The Shift Captain responds to emergency calls and supervises activities or assigned personnel and ensures the facilities, apparatus, and equipment remain in a state of operational readiness on their respective shift. Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Crew Leadership

· Act in capacity of Battalion Chief in their absence (i.e., vacation, sickness, etc.).

· Work with DATC Training leadership to correct member and staff substandard performance through coaching and remediation.

· Integrate into any role in the incident command system.

· Coordinate with Battalion Chiefs to manage shift personnel to assure adequate coverage for calls.

· Assure all call reports for all personnel are complete by end of shift.

· Possess the ability to carry out written and verbal instructions.

· Availability to work flexible schedules and hours based on needs of the business.

Emergency Response

· Respond to Rescue and EMS calls in compliance with DLSC policies, procedures, and guidelines.

· Respond to high profile calls and calls of higher acuity (some judgement-based response)

· Conduct training on shift to assure personnel compliance with CBS.

· Ensure that all apparatus and equipment is in a state of operational readiness and properly stocked.

· Participate in assuring quality through post-incident analysis and debriefings.

· Review and publish Truck Checklist every shift for compliance.

· Perform inspection of and minor repairs to equipment and facilities.

· Facility housekeeping.

Community Engagement

·Possess the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers/members and function as a team member.

· Interacts effectively, professionally, and tactfully with all participating members, staff, agencies, and the public.

· Address public concerns, mediate, and resolve problems as a representative of the DLSC.

· De-escalate situations between staff, members, and/or the public.

DATC Philosophy

· Possess a working knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and guidelines.

· Promote departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety, and quality assurance programs.

  • Support the philosophies and decisions of the DATC and DLSC officers and Board members.

· Other duties assigned by the Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief Operations Officer, and/or Battalion Chief.

Required Training

· Virginia EMT-I or EMT-P

· NIMS 100, 200, 300 (required within 12 months based on availability), 700, 800.

· MCIM 1 & 2.

· Vehicle Rescue Operations

· TIMS (based on class availability)

· Drone Pilot Certification within 12 months

· Knowledge of DLSC policies, procedures, and guidelines, HIPAA rules and regulations, DLSC training requirements, and WVOEMS Protocols.

Preferred qualities are empathy, quick thinking, as well as even-temperament, honesty, reliability, punctual, dependability and ability to work well with others. Other skills also include, effective communication, leadership, problem solving and ability and willingness to follow procedures and policies.

The Shift Captain must possess the:

  • Ability to work well with others in a field setting.
  • Ability to learn, adapt to, and teach DLSC systems of operations, protocols, policies, and guidelines.

  • Ability to use critical thinking to make decisions under pressure.

· Must possess the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers/members and function as a team member.

  • Ability to complete time-based tasks in an efficient manner, without direct supervision.
  • Ability to constructively address issues and resolve conflict in a timely manner.
  • Ability to reason, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Assess situations, exercise sound judgement, and take appropriate action.

· Frequent reaching, sitting, standing, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, and manual dexterity.

· Occasional lifting and carrying of over 100 pounds.

· Ability to lift patients and other equipment from awkward places, positions, and heights.

· Work is typically performed in both standard office and outdoor environments.

· Work is occasionally performed near moving mechanical parts.

· Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, and infectious diseases.

  • 84 hours per pay cycle on a 2-2-3 rotation.
  • When serving in the absence of the Battalion Chief, the work week is a rotating up to 24-hour shifts with hours varying based on EMS needs and includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • FLSA Non-Exempt position (eligible for overtime) ranging between and $20-$25 hourly commensurate with experience.

  • Insurance coverage is available to the DATC employee, with the DATC paying $400 per month with the employee covering the remaining costs.

  • Up to 3% matching at 100%.
