Position Purpose
The Paint Shop is responsible for preparing and coating the interior and exterior walls, ceilings, and other surfaces of the College’s buildings and structures. The Painter A either works as a crew member on large scale projects or independently on smaller routine projects. May be assigned to work independently and take responsibility for a small project. Is responsible for the preparation of surfaces for new coating materials, mixing coating materials according to specifications, applying coating materials to a variety of surfaces where appearance as well as surface protection are important, and for the care and maintenance of the tools and equipment employed in the painter’s trade.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Minimum of 10 years’ commercial/institutional painting experience.
- High school graduate.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work under minimal supervision or as lead member of a crew assigned to small scale and/or routine projects.
- Ability to interact successfully with the College community in a service oriented environment.
- Knowledge of and skill in standard surface preparation and coating application methods and techniques, including the skills necessary to meet specifications regarding match, texture, decoration, thickness, and level.
- Knowledge of and requisite skills to build up, shape, and level surfaces with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and gypsum patching compounds.
- Knowledge of and requisite skill to obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone.
- Skill in matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment used to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty coat, and grade surfaces, such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices, and wet and thickness gauges.
- Ability to work at heights.
- Knowledge of safety regulations applicable to the use of ladders, ropes, harnesses, and scaffolds.
- Willingness to work overtime as required.

- Inspects smaller and routine work sites to determine procedure, material, and equipment needed.
- Selects the appropriate tools, uses coating materials specified, and decides on methods and techniques to use.
- Removes such things as rust, scale, wax, dirt, and old paint or varnish from surfaces by using paint remover, sanding, wire brushing, buffing, and scraping so that materials will adhere properly.
- Smoothes surfaces using sandpaper, steel wool, or brushes.
- Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler.
- Installs special wall covering to prevent surface cracking when doing interior painting.
- Masks, spackles, and putties surfaces and removes accessories as required.
- Selects pre-mixed paints.
- Thins, stirs, and mixes coating materials according to specific directions or following written directions that explain how to apply and use prepared solvents.
- Uses mechanical mixer for volume blending.
- Applies coating materials such as primer, paints, varnishes, and shellacs with brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other related methods and techniques.
- Uses gloss, semi-gloss, and special paints, enamels, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and shellacs.
- Simulates wood grain, marble, brick, and tile effects.
- Assures that coating finish meets surface protection requirements.
- Assures the protection of surrounding areas.
