The Dartmouth Health Postgraduate Fellowship/Residency Programs offer Advanced Practice Providers an intensive 12-month experience of advanced training. Your training will be comprised of didactic and clinical curriculums that will occur concomitantly.

The Otolaryngology Surgical Physician Assistant Postgraduate Fellowship Program is an intensive 12-month training program focused on preparing you for a successful career in otolaryngology. Residents will be integrated into the Advanced Practice Provider team and work alongside other APPs, medical residents, and attendings.  Your training will include parallel clinical and didactic curriculums that will provide you with a solid foundation in the diagnosis of conditions common to the ear, nose, and throat, as well as in outpatient, inpatient, and surgical management.

Clinical experiences will primarily take place at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), a quaternary care facility with air and ground transport services that care for Northern New England’s most critically ill patients. Upon completion of the program, you will be equipped with the following skills:

  • Gain the foundational knowledge to be successful in Otolaryngology
  • Gain surgical robust experience in the operating room in patient preparation, setup, second and first assist
  • Gain exposure to head and neck surgery related to benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck region
  • Develops skills to care for both the adult and pediatric Otolaryngology patient populations in the evaluation and management of common ear, nose, and throat disorders
  • Opportunity to learn evaluation and management of hearing and balance disorders related to Otology and Neuro-otology

The goal of the program is to help you grow and develop the acute and long-range medical and critical thinking skills required to build a successful career in otolaryngology.

Curriculum:

The mission of Postgraduate APP Fellowship/Residency Programs is to provide didactic and clinical curriculums to provide trainees with a solid foundation in the diagnosis and management of patients. The goal of the program is to help trainees grow and develop the surgical, medical, and critical thinking skills required to build successful careers in their chosen field.

The Dartmouth Health Postgraduate Fellowship Programs offer Advanced Practice Providers an intensive 12-month experience of advanced training. Your training will be comprised of didactic and clinical curriculums that will occur concomitantly.

The Advanced Practice Provider Residency in Otolaryngology is an intensive one-year program focused on providing the physician assistant with further education on caring for adult and pediatric otolaryngology patients.

Throughout the clinical an didactic curriculum PA residents will be prepared to:

  • Triage, evaluate, treat, and manage ear, nose, and throat problems, and be an independent first assistant in the operating room
  • Care for patients of all ages with medical and surgical disorders of the ears, the upper respiratory and upper alimentary systems and related structures, and the head and neck
  • Carry out diagnostic evaluations of patients with otolaryngologic disorders
  • Carry out the surgical and nonsurgical management of otolaryngologic disorders, including rehabilitation and appropriate referrals

Accreditation Status:

The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Clinical Postgraduate Program status to the Otolaryngology Surgical Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Residency sponsored by Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

The voluntary accreditation process through ARC-PA provides applicant programs the opportunity to demonstrate compliance with the approved accreditation standards while demonstrating a structured educational experience. While the process is voluntary, it provides programs an external validation of their educational offering. Qualifications

Admission Requirements:

To be considered for admittance to the Otolaryngology Surgical Physician Assistant Postgraduate Residency Program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Be eligible to obtain an PA license in the state of New Hampshire once admitted to the program
  • Be a graduate of an accredited master's degree Physician Assistant (PA) program
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) before the start of the program
  • Certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Participate in Personal Interview (virtual or in person)
  • A criminal background check and a urine drug screen will be performed as a part of the pre-employment requirements for final selected candidates.

Any offer of acceptance is contingent on final candidates successfully completing the standard DHMC pre-employment criminal background check and health screening and clinical credentialing process before matriculation.

  • A brief personal statement describing your interest in pursuing a career in Otolaryngology  (500-1,000 words)
  • Three letters of reference on letterhead
    • These can be submitted by you with your other application materials or directly by your references to entpa.residency@hitchcock.org.
    • If you are currently enrolled in a PA program, one reference must be from your Program or Medical Director

The start date will be coordinated with selected candidates based on licensing and credentialing timeline.
