What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Impact Lead position at data.world?
We’re looking for a Social Impact Lead to be responsible for data.world’s open data community, social impact programs, and open data catalog efforts. This person will manage multiple open data and social impact programs, across a variety of subject matter, working with a cross function of partners, customers, contributors, and subject matter experts or data resources. You will take part in developing certain aspects of the data architecture, and will serve as a resource between our community, data, and the platform. You will manage data.world’s dataset catalog composed of over 600K datasets by contributing more data to the catalog, maintaining the current datasets, and engaging the data.world community with data projects curated and developed by you.
As someone who will be working intimately with the data, you will also be available to assist our community and clients with data related needs, or guide them in finding the resources they need. This person will work cross functionally with sales, operations, engineering, support, and the executive teams.

At data.world, you will:
- Manage the company’s global open data catalog, and further develop the community
- Coordinate and deliver a variety of impact projects using data to benefit society, providing data modeling and organization
- Maintain data projects, and assist with data partnerships, aiding in the use of the platform
- Work with the product development team to ensure a positive and effective user experience in our open data platform
- Lead data partnerships and projects as they pertain to the social impact of the organization
- Drive, implement, and oversee programs, plans, and measurable goals to support current and future social impact efforts
- Manage initiatives, report results, and make recommendations based on community impact, and other factors
- Create annual objectives, and OKRs to measure actions against our long-term social impact strategy
- Lead engagement with business leaders and subject matter experts on specific projects relating to our open community to coordinate strategies, plans, and follow through on tactical efforts
- Manages data projects, performing data modeling and organization, and acts as resource for community members and company leaders
- Assist our community and customers in discovering useful open data
We'd like to see:
- Education, certification, or related experience in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS), Information Management, Data Science or Data Engineering
- A proven track record building/maintaining communities of technical stakeholders, or other experience in the data or technology ecosystem
- Strong understanding of content management and data preservation
- Excellent program management skills, and experience working with a variety of technical stakeholders, including customers.
- Understanding of content management and data preservation
- Experience working in a collaborative workspace
- Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including comfort with public speaking and regular networking
- Experience working in a highly collaborative workspace, and the willingness to reach out to various team members for answers and ideas
- Experience building SQL or SPARQL queries, or experience with Python/R
- Knowledge of building or running a community, and generating new ideas to cultivate activity across various user groups
- Strong familiarity with Git/Github and other relevant communities
- A strong curiosity, and passion for working within a data community
Big pluses include:
- Basic familiarity of Python/R
- Familiarity with semantic editing tools and implementing semantic models using RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS.
- Familiarity with the open data movement, and active participation in relevant areas
- Technical writing experience
- Familiarity with the data.world platform
