Pre-Press/Print Production Assistant

Job Description: As a pre-press/print production assistant, your job is to manage the production of drawings and graphics. Much of your work will involve preparing digital files for print. The job also requires some familiarity with specific printers, scanners and copiers, but these are not skills you are expected to know at your time of hire. Your main task is to maintain a healthy production schedule while making sure our final product meets the expectations of our customers and designers.

About us: Dataflow is upstate New York’s premiere provider of commercial drawings, graphics, and document management solutions. We’ve been in the business for over 60 years, and in that time we’ve learned that the key to sustained success is having a team of great employees and treating them right.

A good fit for us will:

  • Treat coworkers and customers with respect
  • Be trustworthy
  • Be willing to learn and grow
  • Take pride in their work

Typical Day: An average daily schedule might look something like this:

8am-9am: Production call & breakfast- listen to what jobs are being done in other branch offices and report what jobs you are working on. Many employees opt to have some complimentary breakfast at this time (bagels, coffee and more are almost always available).

9am-11am: Prepare digital files for printing - carefully review digital copies, ensuring they are ready for printing. Send the files to the printer, monitoring the print quality, colors, and counts as the machine operates. Refill paper and toner as needed. Organize the printed materials once they are completed.

11am-12pm: Package booklets and clean workstation- box the prints so they don’t get damaged during delivery, clean up any waste made during the process.

12pm-1pm: Process some orders and help load the delivery van- once orders are completed, you enter them into our MIS system. There are also various tasks like helping load the delivery van and taking out recycling that fall to anyone in the office with a hand to spare.

1pm-2pm: Lunch

2pm-3pm: Call with an architect and follow up work: Clients in AEC fields often have concerns over precise details in the drawings(blueprints) we run for them. Conversely, sometimes we have questions for them about the drawings we run. Inevitably, you will need to get on the phone and go over the details of the job, making notes to make edits where possible. Then, you will talk to the design staff to make necessary changes.

3pm-4pm: Laminate and bind some small orders: Small orders range from a few dozen posters to simple black and white copies requested by walk-ins. Various types of finishing work need to be done for different products; these range from stapling and cutting to laminating, punching and binding.

4pm-5pm: Package and process orders, cleanup for the day- small orders are usually entered into the system and left up front for pickup. Larger orders are prepared for UPS and shipping information is shared with the clients. At the end of the day, we like to make sure the shop is clean and ready for work to start again in the morning.
