Controller

Job Summary:

We are a private Holding Company located in Newark, DE that owns and operates post-secondary career and technical training schools. The Controller will plan and direct the accounting operations of the company. We have annual revenues exceeding 20 million dollars from seven different locations in four states. Some travel should be expected, but not excessive. Two or three trips per year, depending on the needs of the Controller.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, which include an accounts payable clerk, two and a half accountants. It is a working position that may require some journal entries and analytics for management.
• Expected to be able to communicate and assist other departments in problem solving.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
• Oversees the production of monthly financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Coordinate monthly meetings to review the financial statements with ownership and the accountants.
• Participates in the production of the annual budget and forecasts.
• Works with external auditors to schedule the audit and provide needed information for the annual audit.
• Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
• Assist and directs in month-end closing; prepare journal entries
• Maintain internal control documents and test internal controls
• Periodically review the account analysis of the accountants for potential adjustments.
• Streamline workflow and processes to optimize accounting systems
• Works closely with CFO for month-end closing and annual budgeting process
• Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.

• Familiarity with the Sage General Ledger reporting system

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
• Ten years or more of related experience preferred.
• Ability to apply knowledge of US GAAP
• Ability to adapt to new and different technologies to enable efficient data gathering and analysis.
• Ability to research, analyze and reconcile general ledger variances.
• Detail oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Able to travel as needed.
