About the Job
This position independently leads product development projects from concept through commercialization for Dawn and is responsible to develop and test formulas and processes for new products, quality improvements and cost reductions. This position will be responsible for directing the technical work of junior team members and interns. Special assignments will be available to assist with career track decisions.
What Does It Take to be a Food Scientist III at Dawn Foods?
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Bachelors in food or science preferred and 7 years of relevant experience or 11 years of relevant work experience in lieu of the bachelor's degree
- Ability to work in a primarily climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.
- Ability to travel as needed.
What You'll Do as a Food Scientist III
- Gathers and leverages knowledge of our customers, consumers and competitors.
- Brings innovative ideas to support strategic plans and enable R&D to apply this knowledge to assigned projects. Aware of key competitive trends across multiple Dawn focus areas.
- Participates in the review of our performance versus competitors. Assists in creating marketplace insights and data analysis.
- Expands strong cross-functional relationships with marketing, operations, engineering, quality, etc. and leverages those partnerships to innovate, resolve concerns and meet timelines.
- Begins to develop an external technology network with vendors, universities, etc. Utilizes relationships and knowledge to influence technical and business decisions.
- Supports effective decision making through independent development of pros and cons list with contingency plan development. Seeks perspectives from others when conducting an analysis. Reviews and finalizes contingency planning with management. Owns delivery of plan and outcome.
- Actively seeks to broaden knowledge and enhance technical skills via interpretation of data from projects, seminars, professional meetings, mentoring, course work and literature.
- Fosters a learning environment for the team. Creates a robust personal development plan in collaboration with manager.
- Recognized as a technical mentor and subject matter expert to colleagues and management.
- Will oversee the work of Interns, Technicians and Food Scientists I and II, providing guidance and assigning daily activities.
- Broadens and applies knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes, safety procedures, GMPs and food regulations.
- Seeks, evaluates, challenges, and utilizes technical information from external and internal sources (Vendors and Senior R&D technical experts) to achieve objectives. Collaborates with multiple technical resources to drive new innovation and change.
- Creates an environment that is open to change and new thinking. Brings forward solutions to problems or issues in a proactive and positive way. Enables fresh perspectives to solving technical and business issues that supports an environment of continuous improvement.
- Independently plans and executes experiments using established laboratory/pilot plant/plant methodology. Ensures all experiments meet the guidelines set by the FDA for food manufacturing. Interprets results and translates them into actionable recommendations and business solutions. Develops new ways to solve technical challenges.
- Leads the planning, execution and reporting of plant trials and product validations for new products and reformulations, concentrating on the science of formulation and ingredients.
- Leads product development projects from concept through commercialization. Serves as technical lead on cross-functional teams (food safety, plant capability/CER).
- Effectively manages time and delivers projects on time and in full. Influences spending decisions for key deliverables.
- Maintains ingredient inventory and lot code tracking. Keep accurate records on lab work and data analysis. Works with internal resources to quickly communicate needed information in case of recalls.
- Safely operates, cleans, and maintains lab-ware and equipment used in a testingenvironment, while adhering to sanitation requirements in the handling and preparation of food products.
- Demonstrates expertise in the Dawn Specification system. Writes, reviews, and issues product, ingredient, and process specifications to support all project work. Ensures all ingredients and finished goods meet customer and FDA compliance guidelines.
