Job Summary
This position is at the Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy. The Program is for young adults (16-18) who are failing in a traditional high school setting or who are currently not attending.
The purpose of this position is to serve as Cadre Team Leader over youth assigned to the residential program responsible for the direct supervision, care, and safety of the youth through strict adherence to established policies, procedures, and rules in the performance of daily activities 24 hours a day 7 days a week in a quasi-military setting. This is shift work.
Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, performs routine custodial and developmental functions at the Academy. Responsible for the safety and care and training of cadets including eating, recreational, and work activities.
Monitors youth behavior and maintains awareness of cadets' emotional and physical needs. Maintains group control and watches for signs of problems and issues.
Coordinates and directs the training activities of the cadets. Supervises and participates in physical exercise and other sporting and cultural activities.
Transports cadets to various activities and appointments.
Maintains logs and other documentation of daily activities.
Instructs cadets in selected military activities such as drills and ceremonies, military courtesy, standards of conduct, duty assignments, etc.
Provides counseling as needed. Resolves differences among residents and intervenes in youth altercations.
Conducts inspections of work and residential facilities.
As needed, administers medication to youth population.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Location : Laurel MD
Hours : 24 hour facility (Hours vary)
Qualifications
Knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws and regulations that govern the overall Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Program.
Knowledge of the function and role of the Youth Challenge Academy and the military organization and structure, policies, and procedures.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with others; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Experience instructing and supervising a team in a highly structured military environment.
Requires physical strength and ability to carry out physical restraint procedures when necessary.
Licensures, Certifications and other requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain certification in CPR / First Aid. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
The work requires flexible schedules, evenings, nights, and weekends. Must participate in IDT and annual training with assigned unit.
Pre-employment drug test and criminal background check is required. This position is subject to random drug tests.
Military or corrections experience preferred, but not required.
Work Experience and Education
Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-06 grade level in the District of Columbia government service, or its non-District equivalent, working in a residential or treatment setting including one year of military experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Environment
Work involves some exposure to hazardous conditions when working outside with cadets, which may result in injury
