Job description
Performs the duties of Shift Operator at the Montclair Cogen Facility as required. While on shift, responsible for the proper operation of the facility while assigned on shift. Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs mechanical and electrical equipment. This equipment includes, but is not limited to the Diesel Engines, DCS, Boilers, Chillers and other auxiliary equipment. When not on relief duty, perform maintenance and trouble shoot components of the facility and energy distribution system as required. This equipment includes, but is not limited to the Gas Turbine, Engines, DCS, Boilers, Chillers and other auxiliary equipment. Strictly adheres to all safety and environmental rules and regulations to protect employees and public safety. Work under the direction of the Lead Operator.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Reads meters, gauges, or automatic devices to record data such as temperature of equipment, vibration of equipment, hours of operation, pressure, and fluid levels to verify operating conditions.
- Keeps lead operator fully informed of unusual conditions, damaged equipment, and current job progress as the job relates to facility operations when not assigned on shift.
- Visually inspects and listens to equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
- Uses facility operating procedures and equipment technical manuals to maintain and repair facility equipment and ensure equipment is operated within operating range. Fully supports the use of a computerized Maintenance Management System by displaying a proficiency in using the system and dedication to the facility maintenance philosophy.
- Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, replacing valve packings, gaskets, valves, and gauges. Cleaning, replacing, oiling and lubricating other component parts and equipment as required.
- Records maintenance actions taken on Work Order forms.
- Opens and closes valves as required for proper system operation and mechanical isolation.
- Opens and closes circuit breakers as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation.
- Performs capital project and/or major program responsibilities as assigned by the Plant Manager or Operations and Maintenance Manager.
- Repairs, replaces, dismantles and examines defective parts along with lubricating and cleaning parts.
- Diagnoses cause of system/equipment malfunctions or failure of operational equipment.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or equivalent required. Eight to ten years’ experience in all of facets of combustion, generation and chilled water production is required.
- New Jersey State third grade (Blue Seal) Engineers license preferred, Black seal license will be considered.
- Applicants must be willing to join the Operating Engineers Local 68.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
The candidate must possess knowledge of all facets of plant operations. Demonstrate the ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations, capable of writing operating procedures and training operators and maintenance personnel. The candidate will need to possess the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, electrical drawings. Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to do reaching, climbing lifting (up to 75 pounds), walking and stooping.
