What are the responsibilities and job description for the Weld Engineer position at Dee Zee?
POSITION SUMMARY - Plan, direct, and coordinate the work activities and resources necessary for manufacturing products in accordance with cost, quality, and quantity specifications as it relates to welding. Act as locations welding expert, successfully managing weld projects, leading weld teams, troubleshooting robotic welding cells, and ensuring the department meets key performance metrics. WORK ENVIRONMENT- Must be willing and able to work in an environment exposed to elements that can include but are not limited to coolant, dust, mist, elevated noise, and uncontrolled temperatures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Direct and coordinate the activities of employees operating robotic welding cells
• Confer with supervisors to coordinate operations and activities within or between departments and shifts
• Evaluate the performance of welding cells, troubleshooting as necessary to ensure meeting of department metrics
• Maintain quality by performing visual inspections of in process parts and completed weldments to confirm that they comply with customer requirements, engineering drawings, Dee Zee weld specifications and weld standards
• Work with engineering and quality to develop and maintain procedures and process settings related to welding
• Conduct employee training in work or equipment operations and safety procedures, or assign employee training to experienced workers
• Confer with management or team members to resolve worker problems, complaints, or issues
• Recommend or implement measures to motivate employees and to improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, and efficiency
• Recommend or execute personnel actions, such as hires, evaluations, and promotions
• Ability to stop the production line and/or prevent shipment of products due to nonconformance or potential nonconformance products to our customers
• Maintain and support the environmental policy with deployment, governance of the policy and processes, evaluation and acting for process improvement
SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Proficient computer skills
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as AWS and Dee Zee welding reference documents, PFMEA/control plans, engineering drawings, safety reference documents, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Understanding of robotic welder including but not limited to setting temperatures, speeds, and feeds to ensure proper welds
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and/or weld symbols to determine the specific welding requirements
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
• Ability to perform and analyze destructive testing including cut and etch
• Strong team building, decision making, and people management skills
• Adequate knowledge of business and management principles, budgeting, resources allocation, human resources
• Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, and team-based project experience
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Industrial Engineering or similar
Experience: Minimum of 5 years' experience in welding operations or a combination of a minimum of 5 years of formal metallurgical education and welding experience, MIG, TIG, and spot-welding experience and/or training required
Computer Skills: Proficient using Microsoft Office; Familiarity with ERP system, inventory software, and manufacturing software preferred
Certificates & Licenses: AWS Certified Welding Inspector certification preferred
