Job Summary: The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) in the Surgery Department is a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), an unlicensed member of the surgical team, who scrubs and/or assists during surgical procedures. This position functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The CSFA functions as a CST by providing direct and indirect patient care, for patients of all ages from pediatric to geriatric by assisting in the preparation of the patient and environment for the performance of surgical procedures. It is the CST's responsibility to know the Surgeon's routine and preferences. In the CSFA role, the CSFA is responsible for providing assistance to surgeon during procedures, performing specialty tasks under direct supervision and guidance of the surgeon, functioning in the intraoperative role of scrub person in a variety of specialties and assisting in providing care to patients of all ages undergoing a surgical procedure.
Qualifications:
Education: Must have the required education needed to be a Surgical Technologist. Completion of CSFA clinicals and successful completion of CSFA exam.
Experience: Documented proficiency in the intraoperative practice with a minimum of 5 years experience as a CST, including efficiency in implementing the CST role in a variety of surgical procedures within several surgical specialties.
Licenses/Certifications: Must have national certification as Certified Surgical Technologist and CSFA certification. Must maintain BLS certification.
