Job Summary

Technologist will be responsible for producing high quality Mammogram studies with attentiveness to emotional needs of the patient for screening patients and diagnostic patients utilizing the full-field GE Essential mammography units in the breast center. Technologist will also be responsible for performing needle localization procedures and ductograms in conjunction with a breast radiologist. Performance of post localization specimen radiographs from the OR is also required. Technologist must have full working knowledge and usage of all features of the complex full-field digital units, and be excellent with communication to the lead Mammo/Stereo/Dexa technologist when issues arise or when assistance is required. Duties include excellent communication with the patient, radiologist, and the ability to obtain detailed history for each patient and inputing that information into the Mammography Reporting System in full, as well as charging the procedure. Performance of standardized screening imaging and tailored-to-each-patient diagnostic imaging is required. Acquiring, merging, and sending of current and previous studies is PACS to the Rad Work Station for mammography to be complete is required. Must demonstrate the ability to stay on time to meet the needs of the daily schedule while also meeting the personal needs of the patient. When not interfacing with a patient, technologist will assist with the variety of mammo office duties that exist on a daily basis (i.e. answering the phones, releasing results to patient and interfacing to electronic medical record from the MRS system, checking in and returning outside films, acquiring orders, etc.)

Technologist will be responsible for preforming high quality imaging in Stereotactic Breast Biopsy in all possible patient positions required to complete the visualization of a lesion and completion of a subsequent biopsy (positioning may take place anywhere in a 360 degree range). Stereotactic technologist of the day is responsible to preform the daily QA on the unit to assure that the unit is performing within manufacturer's guidelines for accuracy. Before a procedure begins, technologist must first interface with the breast radiologist to review all previous imaging so that the correct approach may be determined. Technologist is responsible for setting up the Suros biopsy system once a definite biopsy target has been established. Procedure is performed with the team of the radiologist, nurse navigator or special procedures nurse, and the technologist. Technologist is responsible for post procedure mammogram for clip placement as needed. Technologist is responsible for detailed labeling of breast specimen and delivery and logging of specimen into lab. Post procedure duties include streamlining and labeling images in PACS for the permanent record, and charging the procedure.

Technologist will be responsible for producing the routine lumbar spine and bilateral hip imaging required for a routine DEXA scan. Tech will manipulate the graphs for each study to optimize definitive quality for each exam. Must be proactive at decision-making concerning variations in a scan to accommodate patient issues (i.e. non-dominant forearm scan in lieu of a hip where replacement exists, in lieu of a lumbar scan where metallic spinal fusion exists, etc.). Tech will be responsible for obtaining previous scan information for a patient and inputing the information into the GE Dexa scanner on site for comparison. Must interface well with the lead technologist in the case of any questions or issues. Responsible to finish exam in PACS for interpretation once all information is completed and patient information sheet has been scanned into PACS. Charging of the procedure is also required.

Technologist is responsible to stay current on all credentialing and required patient numbers as required by MQSA and the FDA. Technologist is also required to stay current in all aspects of hospital policies and procedures, and to always conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Must be able to/assist with performance of exams on all types of patients, including physically/emotionally handicapped, all of an age appropriate for the exams performed in the breast center.   

Minimal Acceptable Job Qualifications

Licensure:      

  • Current IN State Board of Health Certification
  • Registered by the ARRT in Mammography
  • BCLS within 30 days of hire
  • SAMA Level 1 within 30 days of hire

Experience:    At least 2 years’ experience in mammography.

Education:      Completion of a two year Radiology School.

Other:               Refer to Rad Tech Job Description (121001) for essential duties and responsibilities pertaining to patient care.

Requires strong working knowledge of normal growth, development, related behaviors, needs, comfort, and range of treatment appropriate to age (including child, adolescent, aging adult) and diagnosis of patients served to support the provision of an individualized multidisciplinary plan of care.

Practices of principles of radiation protection and ALARA.
