The Material Handler is responsible for participating in the shipping and receiving operations of the yard, which includes loading/unloading trucks, managing inventory control processes and quality control of outgoing/returning materials. This role requires the operation of a counterbalance forklift to pick orders and prepare outgoing shipments.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Actively participating in the shipping and receiving operations, including duties such as:
- Loading and unloading trucks
- Checking for overages, damages and shortages
- Order picking and repackaging returned materials
- Operating a counterbalance forklift to pick orders and prepare outgoing shipments
- Safely operating a heavy duty counterbalance forklift outdoors, over uneven terrain to move material and pick orders when required
- Consistently executing pedestrian safety while operating machinery
- Actively participating in cycle counts and inventory control processes
- Maintaining an exceptional attendance record with consistent emphasis on punctuality
- Participating in all group health and safety meetings
- Demonstrating a strong commitment to safety
- Complying with all PERI policies and procedures, and provincial health and safety standards, at all times
- Respect working procedure
- Use protective personal equipment when required
- Report hazards and accidents
- Take care of your health and safety and that of the others
- Other related duties as assigned
Key Skills and Core Competencies

- Ability to work within a team and individually with minimal supervision
Education and Qualifications
- Must have a valid forklift license from a recognized and accredited Canadian training program or school
- Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in the safe operation of a counterbalance forklift
- Previous experience organizing material in an outdoor environment is preferred
- Experience operating a diesel-powered counterbalance forklift with capacities up to 15,000 pounds/ 7,000 kilograms is preferred
- Ability to handle both large and small parts for material preparation and movement
- Ability to perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and the ability to count parts manually
- Dedication to promoting and maintaining the highest standard of workplace health and safety

- Constant exposure to forklift and transport truck traffic
- Availability to work overtime during weekdays and weekends when required
