The Security Officer I is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment across the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital (HCMH) complex. Duties include: patrolling interior and exterior areas to provide a visible deterrent to criminal activity; interacting with patients to ensure they are checked into the Emergency Department (ED) properly and efficiently. Security Officers also: monitor surveillance equipment; detect and act to safeguard against criminal and suspicious activity which threatens patient, visitors, and staff safety and security; provide immediate response and intervention to calls for assistance in dealing with patient, visitor, or employee behavior issues and provides backup for police officers dealing with those situations; respond to situations that require a security intervention; respond to smoke, trouble or fire alarms as required; respond appropriately and in a timely manner to any and all emergency situations as well as to activated security alarms; way-finding to include directing patients/visitors and escorting to destinations as needed; execute decontamination procedures for potentially hazardous situations involving chemical or biological materials. Security Officers are responsible for documenting all incidents, accidents, and emergencies, and may be called upon to testify in criminal or civil court proceedings.
Education and Formal Training: High School Diploma or equivalent; Criminal Justice, Basic Law Enforcement, or Hospital Security related training or certification highly preferred; EMS or rescue squad experience or Emergency Department technician experience not required but advantageous.
Work Experience: Law Enforcement or Hospital Security related experience greatly desired.
Physical Requirements: Able to walk a distance of 2500 feet (indoors, level surface) within 10 minutes without apparent physical difficulty; able to ascend and descend 3 floors of stairs (60 steps) within 5 minutes without apparent physical difficulty; able to lift a 100 lb. object a minimum of 12" from floor, holding for 5 seconds without apparent physical difficulty; able to lift a 50 lb. object and move a minimum of 10 feet before contact with floor without apparent difficulty; able to restrain violent/combative patients to prevent injuries to themselves and others. Licensure: Driver's License (valid with no restrictions, and clear record)
At least 18 years of age.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Able to communicate in a professional manner at all times; able to follow Hospital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidance; capable of de-escalating situations through verbal interaction in a stressful and fast-paced environment; be capable of physically intervening in situations involving aggressive and physically violent individuals while following applicable policy and law; able to follow directions accurately; able to evaluate situations and develop appropriate response plan with little to no direct supervision; excellent customer service skills and basic computer knowledge; able to assist in lifting patients as needed.
