Responsibilities:
MAJOR DUTIES: As a Neonatologist, is directly or indirectly involved in managing a full range of critical care cases and problems within the neonatal-perinatal sub-specialty field, including the very difficult cases requiring ability to recognize and treat rare and difficult- to-identify symptoms or signs. Cases are often critical and require immediate decisions or are complicated by patients who fail to respond to previously tried treatment regimens.

Performs most advanced diagnostic and life-saving treatment procedures. Develops full treatment regimens requiring knowledge of new techniques, use of prolonged or complicated procedures, or advanced and delicate skills. As a technical specialist in neonatal and perinatal issues, considerable weight is given to recommendations provided to other colleagues. Serves as a consultant to other health care providers and patients’ family members in difficult cases. Responsible for training medical students, physician assistant students, interns or residents assigned for training or research within the specialty field.

1. Performs as a sub-specialist and consultant in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine for Pediatrics. Must be board certified with equivalent breadth and depth of experience to be an expert in neonatal diseases. Admits neonates to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Intermediate Care Unit. Develops and follows treatment plans during inpatient stay. As a sub-specialist, evaluates and treats critically ill neonates, arranging admissions, transfers and medical air evacuations, as needed. Arranges consultations to other subspecialty physicians at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) and other hospitals. Orders lab tests and x-rays necessary to complete diagnosis and correlates results with clinical findings. Participates in providing continuous in-house coverage of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and delivery service. Serves as an advocate for infants and their families regarding the appropriate medical, surgical, psychological, social, and development interventions in a multi-disciplinary setting. (65%)

2. Provides appropriate resuscitative measures in the delivery room (e.g. preterm infants, emergency C-sections, complicated deliveries, etc.) and determines disposition to NICU or Mother-Baby Unit (MBU). When needed, performs well-baby exams and provides anticipatory guidance. Provides outpatient follow-up of NICU graduates and other neonatal patients as necessary to include assisting in the evaluation and treatment of neonatal patients in the emergency room and other departments within the hospital.

3. As a staff neonatologist in a Pediatric Resident and Neonatology GME program, supervises the neonatal fellows, pediatric residents and nurse practitioners to ensure quality, timely and appropriate medical care. Will assist in the education, evaluation and mentorship of the aforementioned trainees. Supports the EEO Program. Attends regular Department and Hospital level committee meetings as assigned.

4. Provides staff expertise in neonatal/newborn medicine. Provides continuing education to medical professionals in the area of neonatal-perinatal medicine as well as conducts Departmental QI/PI. Conducts teaching conferences and lectures for nursing and medical staff on techniques and theory of well-child preventative pediatrics, neonatal, and perinatal issues. (5%)

Board Certified/Eligible

Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
