The Dean of the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences reports to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. As the chief executive office of the College, the incumbent is responsible for academic enhancement, along with fiscal and strategic planning, providing management and oversight of all curricula, programs, budgets, personnel, and ancillary activities reporting to the unit. Building on the University’s commitment to produce 21st century leaders capable of contributing to the sustainability and economic development of the global community, the incumbent will foster and communicate a clear vision and carry out the mission of the College in cooperation with the faculty. The Dean will become an active member of the Deans Council and other committees as assigned by the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs or the President of the University. The new Dean will function in a team environment and will effectively communicate with all constituencies of the University.
The following are the functions essential to performing this job:- Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is the chief executive officer of the College, responsible for academic enhancement, along with fiscal and strategic planning.
- Provides management and oversight of all curricula, programs, budgets, personnel, and ancillary activities reporting to the unit.
- Provides recommendations on all matters pertaining to college programs, personnel, and college facilities as needed.
- Fosters and promotes an environment for revenue generation along with the acquisition of state, federal, and private funding; actively participating in all University sponsored fund-raising initiatives.
- The incumbent will research and implement new programs and initiatives for the enhancement of academic standards of the College.
- Serves as a primary spokesperson for the College in its relationships with diverse constituencies both internal and external to the University.
- Enhance the commitment to academic excellence and work in collaboration with the VP Strategic Enrollment, Dean of Graduate, Adult and Extended Studies and the Associate VP Student Success in implementation of an enrollment growth plan focused on development, monitoring and maintenance of viable programs grounded in excellent curricula offerings, student retention and persistence, co-curricular activities, and timely graduation.
- Promotes the vision and mission of the College in alignment with the University’s strategic plan in cooperation with the faculty while fostering excellence in teaching, research, outreach, and service to the community as noted in the University’s mission.
- Serve on all committees and academic groups that will enhance the viability and accessibility of the College.
- The Dean, in the role as Administrative Head of the College will initiate, direct and coordinate collaborations with other Universities as well as advocate for the needs of the College.
Other Functions: Individuals in this role may be assigned one or more of the following tasks on a rotating or as-needed basis.
- Serve on committees, organizations and groups as assigned by the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and the President of the University.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Office of the President or Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
- Demonstrated success as an administrator, preferably a minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership as a Department Chairperson or comparable leadership role(s) with increasing levels of responsibility that will include management of academic programming, grants management, assessment of student success metrics, management of personnel and operational budgets, facilities, in a collective bargaining environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading transformational change within a unit or department to include implementation of innovative programming and/or promotion of academic quality.
- Demonstrated experience fostering a student focused environment within a unit or department
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, program evaluation: assessment of teaching and learning, and the ability to develop and/or monitor of key performance metrics to sustain and enhance academic programming.
- Demonstrated experience in personnel evaluation as aligned with University metrics and priorities.
- Demonstrated success in fostering professional growth in both students and faculty.
- Ability to recruit and retain faculty aligned with University strategic priorities and metrics.
- Aligned with the University’s mission, demonstrated commitment to outreach and service to University stakeholders.
- An earned doctorate as specified by the degree area(s) from an accredited institution in any area represented within the College.
- A significant record of achievement in teaching, scholarly activity, and service appropriate to the appointment at the rank of Associate Professor; preferably Professor with earned tenure.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications
- The ability to engage all University stakeholders
- Knowledgeable of emerging issues impacting higher education
- Experience with shared governance preferably in a collective bargaining environment a plus.
